The authorities investigating the motive behind Natalie Rupnow's open gunfire at the Abundant Life Christian School, found shocking details on the case as the reports revealed that she was in contact with a Californian man who was allegedly planning to blow up a government building.
A San Diego judge issued a gun violence restraining order against Alexander Paffendorf, the Californian man accused of getting in contact with Rupnow and planning a mass shooting. He was ordered to surrender all guns and ammunition in his possession within 48 hours of the restraining order.
"They had their full guns out all over the street," a neighbor witnessed. "There were cop cars. I'd say about 15 cops are here."
What did Alexander Paffendorf do?
According to the reports, Alexander Paffendorf, a 20-year-old man residing in Carlsbad, California, contacted Rupnow before the school shooting. He was reportedly messaging Rupnow about his plans to target a government building. As per the Carlsbad Police Department:
"During an FBI interview, Paffendorf admitted to the FBI agents that he told Rupnow that he would arm himself with explosives and a gun and that he would target a government building."
The Carlsbad Police Department stated that they were investigating which local government building Paffendorf was planning to blow up. Although the investigation is underway, the police informed that there was no prominent threat to the Carlsbad community. Paffendorf's next court hearing is scheduled for January 3, 2025.
The police officers are further investigating the messages between Rupnow and Paffendorf to get a motive behind Rupnow's open gunfire that injured five students and a teacher at the school while shooting one student and a substitute teacher to death before killing herself in a self-inflicted gunshot wound.
The authorities have recently identified the victims killed in the school shooting. The substitute teacher was identified as 42-year-old Erin West, while the student was named Rubi Vergara, a 14-year-old freshman.
The police are still unsure whether the attack was planned and aimed at the specific individuals. Madison Police Chief Officer, Shon Barnes stated:
"I do not know if she planned it that day or if she planned it a week prior. To me, bringing a gun to school to hurt people is planning. And so we don’t know what the premeditation is."
The FBI and the Madison Police Department in Wisconsin are working together to find any connection between Paffendorf and Rupnow to determine a solid motive behind the recent shooting. The authorities have not revealed any further details as the investigation process remains ongoing.
