The families of University of Idaho murder victims are raising money in order to attend the murder trial of Bryan Kohberger. Bryan Kohberger is scheduled to face trial for the murders of four University of Idaho students, including Kaylee Goncalves, Madison Mogen, Xana Kernodle, and Ethan Chapin.
According to the authorities, Kohberger faced four charges of murder and one charge of felony burglary. His trial is set to be held next year from June to August.
Several friends and family members of the victims' families are raising money in order to help them attend the murder trial, which is scheduled to be held nearly 300 miles away from Idaho, in the state capital of Boise.
Victims’ families launched GoFundMe campaigns to attend Bryan Kohberger’s murder trial
The victims included Kaylee Goncalves, Madison Mogen, Xana Kernodle, and Ethan Chapin. They were fatally stabbed to death in their off-campus rental home on November 13, 2022. Dylan Mortensen and Bethany Funke were the only surviving students at their residence in Moscow, Idaho.
In his previous hearing, Kohberger chose to waive his right to a speedy trial and refrained from entering a plea, leading the judge to enter a not-guilty plea on his behalf. The judge rescheduled Kohberger's trial from June to August 2025.
Kohberger's trial is divided into two parts: the first to determine whether he is guilty or innocent of four counts of first-degree murder and felony burglary, and the second, if found guilty, to decide if he should receive the death penalty. His trial will reportedly last for at least three months.
Friends are trying to help the families of Goncalves and Mogen with several fundraising campaigns. Among them, one fundraiser has raised $67,435 out of its $75,000 target for Goncalves’ family, which will go toward an Airbnb or a house that the Goncalves family will take for rent for its 10 family members as well as their small pets for three months of the trial.
"Since this will be a huge disruption to their work and life, we also would love to raise enough money for meals, loss of work, transportation, etc." according to the GoFundMe page.
Friends of Ben Mogen, Madison's father, created a GoFundMe to help him cover the expenses to attend the trial of Bryan Kohberger.
"We would love to help Ben be able to attend the trial with a few people close to him for support and not have to worry about the finances to make it happen. All your donations will go directly to help pay for travel and lodging for Ben to be able to attend the trial as he is available to, with any leftover donations going towards the memorial set up for the 4 students lost in this tragedy," the post read.
This campaign surpassed its $17.5k target by raising $17,759 so far. While another fundraising campaign has been able to raise $17,320 out of the $45,000 target as of November 18.
"Three months is a long time for Karen and Scotty to go without their normal wages, so let’s help them with the ability to be there in person to represent Maddie and support the other victims and their families. Your funding will additionally help remedy the hardship caused by the criminal defendant moving the trial from North Idaho to Boise, 460 miles away from the home of Karen and Scotty," the organizer wrote.
According to GoFundMe, any donations not used to get Mogen's mom and stepfather to the trial will be allocated to memorial scholarships.
