Tim Sheehy, GOP candidate for Montana senate, has been making headlines for his gunshot wound controversy. He is standing against Democratic Party's John Tester who has held the senate since 2007. While Sheehy is allegedly in the lead, per the surveys, people are confused about his claims that he suffered a gunshot wound during his work as a Navy SEAL in Afghanistan.
According to a report by The Washington Post, Sheehy sought medical treatment in 2015 after his gun went off in Glacier National Park. The park ranger has claimed publicly that he was approached by Sheehy when the latter accidentally shot himself in the arm. He then went to the hospital for his treatment.
However, Sheehy has now alleged that he did not suffer a gunshot at the park. Instead, he felt that the bullet, which he received in Afghanistan, was in his arm that had dislodged.
Per NBC, in an interview with Megyn Kelly, Tim Sheehy addressed the confusing series of incidents. When asked if there were any medical reports about the gunshot wound that he received in Afghanistan, the GOP candidate said no.
"There isn’t — I mean, that’s the point. You go and you check on it, and you leave. There’s not an extensive medical record for any of this stuff."
He alleged that he did not report to save a fellow SEAL in Afghanistan as he claimed he was shot due to a friendly "fire ricochet."
"No, that was never the allegation that — the point is, you know, it was a friendly fire ricochet downrange that wasn’t reported at the time," said Tim Sheehy.
Kelly further asked him if he was injured in the park in 2015, and Sheehy responded with a yes.
"Yes, I fell and injured my arm when we were hiking."
"So that’s why I went because I could feel the bullet get dislodged when I, when I, when I fell and fell on the arm, you could feel the bullet get dislodged. And then went to the ER to say, hey, look, you know, I’ve got internal bleeding going on here. I’ve injured my arm," Sheehy added.
In his book Mudslingers: A True Story of Aerial Firefighting, Tim Sheehy shared details about his time in the Navy. He mentioned that he was discharged from the service due to medical reasons. However, a report by NBC claimed that he resigned from the service voluntarily.
Tim Sheehy's spokesperson's statement regarding the candidate's gunshot wound controversy.
A spokesperson for Tim Sheehy recently addressed the controversy and mentioned that he received the gunshot wound in Afghanistan.
"Tim never reported it because he didn’t want to trigger an investigation of his team, be pulled from the battlefield, and see a fellow teammate be punished. It was always about protecting a fellow team member of his unit he thought could have been responsible due to friendly fire ricochet in the heat of an engagement with the enemy."
The spokesperson also claimed that the questions regarding his wound were attempts to "tear down" his record.
