The butchered remains of a dolphin were recently discovered on the beach at Allen Ave in Allenhurst, New Jersey. According to the Marine Mammal Stranding Center, "the animal's flesh had been completely removed with clean cuts from a sharp instrument." The dolphin's flesh was entirely removed leaving its head, dorsal fins, and flukes.

"On Wednesday October 30th the Marine Mammal Stranding Center responded to a very disturbing call. The partial remains of a dolphin had been discovered on the beach at Allen Ave. in Allenhurst, NJ. When our Stranding Coordinator arrived, he found a Common dolphin that appeared to have been butchered," the MMSC wrote on Facebook.

On Tuesday night witnesses reported to have seen a common dolphin was "struggling in the surf one block away" from the place where the carcass of the dolphin was found.

According to the MMSC, "The night before this animal was discovered, a live Common dolphin was reported struggling in the surf one block away. Witnesses reported that the dolphin was able to make it over the sandbar and swam back out." However, it is not completely clear whether the remains belong to the same dolphin.

Later the Marine Mammal Stranding Center posted on Facebook stating that the dolphin remains were brought back to the Marine Mammal Stranding Center to be documented and photographed after which the carcass was buried on the beach. The NOAA Office of Law Enforcement is currently investigating this case.

Many online users expressed their shock and disgust over the incident.
