The California Department of Public Health has officially reported the first known case of clade I mpox, formerly known as monkeypox. As reported by the CDC, the case is related to the ongoing outbreak of the same in Central and Eastern Africa. However, the risk of transmission to the general public remains low.

All we know about mpox
According to the CDC Newsroom, the infected individual is not on any specific mpox treatment, and the symptoms are getting better. Furthermore, the CDC is testing the patient's specimens for additional viral characterization, and the agency has joined forces with the state to locate any potential contacts.
It is important to note that casual contact does not put one at risk for mpox. However, it is important to avoid close contact with those infected. It is also advised to avoid contact with materials used by those infected, including, but not limited to, clothing, bedding, and toothbrushes.
While in the past, Clade 1 infections may have been more severe than Clade II, "recent infections from Clade I mpox may not be as clinically severe as in previous outbreaks," the CDC claims. the Mpox virus is in the same family as the smallpox but is typically less dangerous.
Symptoms of the same include fever, headaches, swellings, back pain, and aching muscles. In some cases, a rash may develop on the hands, feet, chest, face, mouth, or near the genitals.
According to ABC News, this is the first reported case of the clade 1b virus in the nation. The first case in Africa can be traced back to Congo in September.
