Owen Leahy, a beloved musician from Massachusetts, passed away on January 6, 2025. A GoFundMe account with an initial goal of $20,000 has been set up by Leahy's best friend Juliet Cruz in order to to help his family, with "funeral and other related expenses to his passing." The campaign has already successfully raised over $21,000.
Owen Leahy was part of an emo band called This Is Pointless, and band member Rob posted about his death on the band's page. Although the post does not give a reason for death, Rob wrote:
"Owen and I met when we were 16 at an alternative high school for kids who struggle with substance abuse issues. We immediately clicked solely based on our music taste and the fact that neither of us were looking to actually stop getting high at that time."
Rob then went on to outline Owen Leahy's lengthy and courageous battle with alcoholism and substance abuse.
"Owen struggled with addiction and mental health. Unfortunately, these types of issues are a life-long battle. in Fall of 2024, after 10 years of sobriety, Owen picked up. The reason I have decided to post this here, is because I do not have any other way of reaching out to the people that supported our band. Owen loved everything about DIY emo."
