What happened on the Volaris Flight?

On December 8, 2024, a domestic flight in Mexico, Volaris Flight 3041, was traveling from El Bajio to Tijuana when a passenger interrupted the flight and asked to divert the plane to the U.S. instead of going to Tijuana, which borders the U.S.

According to The Guardian, citing Mexico’s Secretariat of Civilian Protection's statement, the passenger allegedly tried to assault the crew and tried to enter the cockpit using force.

The hijacker, a 31-year-old, was detained by the crews and the Volaris flight was diverted to Guadalajara in central Mexico, where the hijacker was handed over to the authorities. The plane continued its flight to Tijauna from Guadalajara.

Volaris released a statement on the situation on X,

"Volaris regrets the inconvenience that this situation caused. For Volaris, the safety of our passengers and crews is the highest priority."

According to the X account Mario Nawfal (@MarioNawfal), the 31-year-old hijacker was traveling with his wife and two kids. Furthermore, multiple news outlets reported that the hijacker as his motive for the hijack claimed that his relative was kidnapped and he was threatened with death if he lands Tijuana.

The Guardian reported that the man who attempted the hijacking of the Volaris flight was identified as 'Mario'.
