A scene of mayhem occurred in Midtown Manhattan on Christmas Day when a cab hit multiple pedestrians near Macy’s store in Herald Square. The mishap happened at around 4 PM in this area and at least seven people were hurt; among them is a boy of nine years and his mother.
After the incident, bystanders immediately attempted to assist those trapped under the car. A tourist visiting from Oregon recounted to ABC 7 how he and others lifted the taxi off of the young boy and his mother.
“I ran over and noticed there was a little boy, his leg was underneath the front passenger tire as it was spinning. And then there was a group of people. One gentleman went over shut the car off, got into it shut it off. There was a whole group of us that ripped the fender off, lifted the car back and then that’s when I grabbed the little boy, got him to the corner, realized that what ended up being his mom underneath.”
Speaking to The Post, Sam Mohammed, a hot dog vendor who watched from only feet away, said:
“I saw the car going onto the sidewalk and hitting people. This is scary”.
Details of the incident
The 58-year-old taxi driver apparently suffered some kind of medical emergency, causing the vehicle to leap onto the sidewalk at the bustling corner of West 34th Street and Sixth Avenue, said police officials.
As per the reports, eyewitness accounts described it as a scene of terror: the taxi plowed into a crowd of holiday shoppers outside the iconic department store with its elaborate Christmas displays.
Among those injured were a nine-year-old boy who sustained a cut, a 41-year-old woman with head injuries, a 49-year-old woman who suffered a leg injury, and three other women aged 19, 37, and another 49-year-old who declined medical treatment at the scene.
Authorities said both the boy and his mother were being taken to Weill Cornell Medical Center and Bellevue Hospital. Thankfully, none of the injuries appeared life-threatening, officials said.
Police are still investigating the cause of the driver's medical incident and have not arrested anybody yet. Police said there were no life-threatening injuries reported by those who were affected by this mishap.

The holiday season has been filled with security concerns from around the world, most recently after a tragic incident in Magdeburg, Germany, when a car drove into a crowded Christmas market and killed five people, including a nine-year-old boy, and injured over 200 others. The attack occurred on December 20, 2024.
Taleb-Abmoh, a 50-year-old psychiatrist from Saudi Arabia, drove in the market for about three minutes. Officials revealed that at least 40 individuals were severely or critically wounded among the victims. The driver then handed himself over to the police shortly after the occurrence and has been charged with many counts of murder and attempt to murder.
