Winters are all set to bring a storm to several counties of Michigan. The National Weather Service has issued warnings and weather advisories that will be valid from 5 pm EST on Wednesday. The people of many counties have been advised to ensure their safety amid the disastrous storm.
The winter storm warning is in effect in southwest and west-central Michigan. The storm is expected to begin on Wednesday and will stay through Friday morning. Heavy snow with strong winds is expected to create problematic situations for the residents. Areas near the lakeshore can also experience wind gusts of about 50 mph with snowfall of about 10 inches.
The counties of Michigan that are advised to stay careful are Isabella, Clare, Gratiot, Montcalm, Ionia, Eaton, Clinton, Jackson, and Ingham.
According to M Live, the NWS' advisory reads,
"Snow and blowing snow expected. Total snow accumulations between 2 and 4 inches with locally higher amounts possible. Winds gusting as high as 45 mph."
The organization also mentioned that several roads will face the wrath of winter.
"Snow squalls will impact the Wednesday evening commute with visibility rapidly falling below 1/4 mile and rapid changes in road conditions including the I96, I94, US131, US127, and I69 corridors."
"Lake effect snow along with gusty winds develop behind the squalls with potential scattered power outages as well as occasional poor visibilities and hazardous travel conditions Wednesday Night into Thursday," the advisory read.
They have also asked people to stay safe on the slippery roads as they might impact commutes in the morning.
NWS has been issuing continuous updates to people for their safety during the storm. They have also warned them of lesser visibility of roads across northern Michigan.
What are the travel essentials for residents of Michigan?
Driving in the storm in Michigan is extremely difficult due to lesser visibility and slippery roads. Traveling in the storm has also led to many fatalities due to vehicles. More than 480,000 injuries are reported every year due to the extreme snowfall.
It is obvious that travelers have to stay very careful while driving during the snow. Therefore, they must watch the speed of their vehicles and drive slowly. A good knowledge of routes with less snow would help in traveling through the storm.
One of the most common reasons for accidents is ice accumulation on tree branches or power lines. Travelers are advised to avoid downed power lines and keep their cell phones with them. If possible, people are also advised to avoid driving in such weather conditions.
