A tragic incident came to light when a Walmart employee was found dead in the store's walk-in oven. The woman, who was 19, has been identified as Gursimran Kaur. The incident took place on October 19, and the Halifax police were called at around 9:30 p.m. to report Kaur's sudden death. An audio of the call has confirmed how Kaur was locked in the oven of the store's bakery.
According to a GoFundMe page set up for Gusimran's family, she and her mother moved to Canada from India two years ago. They both worked at Walmart together. On October 19, when Kaur's mother could not locate her for an hour, she kept looking for her and finally located her in the oven. The store was located at 6990 Mumford Road, Halifax, Nova Scotia.
The recording of the 911 dispatch call has been obtained by The Daily Mail which has the details about Kaur's tragic death. In the recording, an officer could be heard telling a first dispatcher,
"Female is locked in an oven in the bakery. Oven is on, unsure if the staff are able to turn it off."
Later, a first dispatcher confirmed that the woman was "out of the oven upon arrival."
The investigation of the case is underway. The Halifax Regional Police have stated via Facebook that the investigation of the incident will be complicated.
"It is important to note that the investigation has not yet reached a point where the cause and manner of death have been confirmed. The investigation is complex and involves several partner agencies. An investigation of this nature may take a significant amount of time."
The police have also asked the public to be mindful before sharing speculative information on social media.
A spokesperson for Walmart confirmed to E! News that the Walmart store has been temporarily closed until further notice. The spokesperson said,
"We are heartbroken and our deepest thoughts are with our associate and their family."
"Our focus remains on taking care of our associates and making sure they have the support they need. As police have stated, this is a very complex matter and the investigation is ongoing."
