Almost all of the schools in the Los Angeles Unified School District (LAUSD) are closed in the wake of the ongoing fires, though they are slated to reopen this Monday, district officials announced on Sunday evening,
The officials claim that conditions have improved in the area, including "fire containment, air quality, wind conditions, utility availability, road accessibility, school-site readiness and staffing," rendering it possible for school operations to resume as normal.
LAUSD officials said in a statement Sunday:
"Conditions have improved for a majority of areas across the Los Angeles region and the District is confident it is safe for students and employees to return to campuses."
However, several schools will remain closed as a result of the mandatory evacuation orders. Keep on reading to know the full list of these schools.
Everything we know ahead of LAUSD reopening schools as seven remain shut
ABC7 reports that the following schools will remain closed until conditions improve and permit reopening:
1) Canyon Charter Elementary
2) Kenter Canyon Charter Elementary
3) Palisades Charter Elementary
4) Marquez Charter Elementary
5) Topanga Charter Elementary
6) Lanai Road Elementary
7) Paul Revere Middle School
As for the Roscomare Road Elementary and Community Magnet Charter, the decision remains unclear, though it will be announced at 5:30 a.m. on Monday. Officials said:
"The schools will reopen as soon as conditions allow, at which time, we will notify families."
Principal Joseph Martinez sent a voicemail to all members of the Carpenter Community Charter, notifying them that all the air filters in the K-5 elementary school have been upgraded to ensure proper air quality on-site.
ABC7 reports, at the time of writing, the district has been preparing makeshift classrooms and learning spaces for students who lost their schools to the Palisades Fire. Patch has reported that all employees will be given a hand with securing substitutes to fill in and other hurdles that may come their way.
Schools opening this week will be operating on a "full weather inclement weather schedule," which means that all outdoor and athletic activities will be limited. Furthermore, masks will be provided to students and teachers alike. As for the employees and families "directly impacted by the fires," schools will be offering a "number of resources" to "help address the ongoing needs."
The official statement from LAUSD concludes by saying:
"The District remains committed to working with our community partners to provide families and employees with childcare, transportation, mental health resources, and other essential services. We will be monitoring conditions throughout the evening and overnight. A 10 p.m. update will be posted at lausd.org. Should anything change, we will begin notifying families and employees of any changes by 5:30 a.m. on Monday."
As of Sunday, January 12, Patch reports that at least 7 schools were decimated in the ongoing fires.
