A New York man, Jamie Lambros, won hearts while attempting to save a mother and her child during a Bermuda vacation. While Lambros successfully rescued the drowning mother and son, he lost his life. Following his tragic passing, his brother and mother have set up a fundraiser to cover his funeral costs and the "unexpected expenses of bringing Jamie back home from Bermuda." The fundraiser on GoFundMe has now successfully raised over $42,000.

The incident occurred on October 7, when Jamie Lambros was vacationing in Bermuda with 11 family members. Per NBC New York, the family visited Horseshoe Bay Beach, a popular destination on the island. Lambros' mother, Phyllis Gasparri, revealed how her 48-year-old son saw a young boy in distress in the ocean. Without giving it much thought, Jamie jumped into the ocean to save the young boy and his mother from drowning. She said,

"He went into the water to save that kid. That’s who he was. He will give you the shirt off his back, he will help anyone."

Jamie Lambros' family also noted that he was not a fine swimmer. However, he could not stand seeing people struggling for their lives. The mother and her 10-year-old son, who were drowning, made it to the shore. However, a woman tried to bring Lambros to the shore, but it was too late, as he had already died.

Noting how Jamie's passing has left a hole in his mother's heart, she said,

“My heart is unrepairable. No one could ever repair it. I go on for my other beautiful sons and my granddaughter.”

Jason's brother and mother set up a GoFundMe fundraiser, which raised over $43,023 from 555 donations at the time of this article's publishing. Describing Lambros' in the website's bio, his family wrote,

"Jamie was so much more than a son, brother, uncle, cousin, godfather and friend – he was the life of every party, someone whose laughter filled any room, and whose heart was as big as his spirit. His loss leaves an unimaginable void in all our lives."

People are also calling Lambros a "hero." His family has also expressed their disappointment in the beach's lack of safety and lifeguards.

Jamie Lambros' brother pays a heartful tribute

Joey Pappas, Lambros' brother, penned a heartwarming note on Facebook.

"I love you and with every second that passes by I miss you more. I miss us three amigos Jamie, Jason & Joey. My hero. I will always think of you and I’m crying my heart out right now wishing you were here."

Pappas also urged people to donate for Jamie.
