Minnesota governor Tim Walz has blasted Trump for trying to shut off the funding for law enforcement, health care, schools, veterans, and farmers, referring to it as "unprecedented" and "illegal."
In a tweet on X, he stated that he is working "diligently" to reverse it for the Minnesotans. Tim Walz said:
"President Trump just shut off funding for law enforcement, farmers, schools, veterans, and health care. We are working diligently to reverse this, but we are preparing for every outcome to help Minnesotans weather this storm. Minnesota needs answers. We’ll see Trump in court."
While the White House budget office did call for a spending freeze to go into effect by 4 p.m. Tuesday, a federal judge temporarily blocked the push. Judge Loren L. AliKhan for the U.S. District Court for the District of Columbia said she wants to consider arguments from the U.S. government and the plaintiffs in the case. CBS News has reported that the freeze could have massive implications.
Here's all we know about the policy in response to which Governor Tim Walz called President Donald Trump "baffoonish"
The freeze on funding is expected to affect nonprofits, universities, small business loans, and state and local government grants, the outlet has reported, though the motion has been pushed to at least 5 p.m. by Monday to accommodate further deliberation.
However, this temporary halt only applies to programs that are federally funded. The White House has reported that just last year, $3 trillion was spent on federal assistance programs. In an official notice from the Executive Office of the President,
"Any program that provides direct benefits to Americans is explicitly excluded from the pause and exempted from this review process. In addition to Social Security and Medicare, already explicitly excluded in the guidance, mandatory programs like Medicaid and SNAP will continue without pause. Funds for small businesses, farmers, Pell grants, Head Start, rental assistance, and other similar programs will not be paused."
Speaking at a press conference at the St. Paul YMCA on Tuesday, Tim Walz doubled down on his stance:
"Donald Trump’s reckless action cut off funding to law enforcement, farmers, school, child care, veterans and health care. While he was out golfing, he threw the country into crisis. This is not bold, it's not leadership. It's stupid, buffoonish, childish. Those are our dollars that he is stealing, unconstitutionally," he added. "Congress as I served, as Attorney General Ellison served, appropriates the dollars. This is so far beyond the pale to try to pull these dollars back."
CBS News has reported that at the time of writing, well over 24 Democratic attorneys general are moving to file a lawsuit against the Trump administration to prevent him from enacting the freeze.
