Donut company and coffeehouse chain Krispy Kreme offered free donuts to PlayStation users impacted by an outage of network services by the video gaming brand.
The services were unavailable for nearly 24 hours when Krispy Kreme announced that it would offer free donuts at the participating US locations on February 8, 2025, between 5 and 7 pm. The donut company shared an X post writing:
“Calling all gamers: this play station still works. Grab a free Original Glazed Doughnut today from 5-7 PM—because sweet rewards don’t need a server.”
Although PlayStation faced a network outage for some time, the network services have now been restored, as per an update by the video gaming company. Taking to X on February 9, 2025, PS wrote:
“PSN has been restored. You should be able to access online features without any problems now. For more details: status.playstation.com Sorry for the inconvenience!”
In a subsequent post, the company clarified that the network outage was due to an operational issue. The X post mentioned that users would be compensated for the issue.
“Network services have fully recovered from an operational issue. We apologize for the inconvenience and thank the community for their patience. All PlayStation Plus members will automatically receive an additional 5 days of service,” the post mentioned.
According to a report by Daily Mail Gaming, the outage was PS’s longest one since 2011, when services were unavailable for 23 days. As understood from its official website, the service is now working with account management, gaming, and social marked with green bullet points.
Here is how the PlayStation outage affected gamers
Speaking to KCAL News, a person who received a donut from Krispy Kreme said he was excited about the idea. He recalled:
“And they just started like bringing them out like, one guy was just taking them off like the little slider where they are being made and grabbing them be like ‘Here you go,’ ‘Here you go!’”
According to Comic Book, at the time of the outage, players using a digital-only PS5 could only access games they had already installed since adding a new disc drive requires an internet connection for activation.
Additionally, those who share games on PS5 faced issues, as some or all of their shared games didn’t work offline if they weren’t on the primary console.
The February sale on the PlayStation Store is now live, offering discounts of up to 75% on 2,000 PS5 and PS4 games. The New Year's Play Sale runs until February 12, 2025, for the Critics’ Choice and Hot Deals sections, while Indies deals last until February 19, 2025. A special Deal of the Week also features a 30% discount on a highlighted game.
In April 2011, a cyberattack caused a major PlayStation Network outage, which Sony confirmed three days later. The attack compromised the data of over 77 million users, leaving the network down for 23 days.
Sony described it as a well-planned breach, with hackers planting a file on their servers containing the phrase “We are Legion,” a slogan linked to the hacker group Anonymous.
