Matt Gaetz is reportedly President-elect Donald Trump's nomination for his attorney general. The news has come as a shock to many due to Gaetz's recent legal battle. However, he has been a staunch ally of Trump and could be the next head of the Justice Department.

According to Newsweek, Gaetz is an attorney who received his Juris Doctor from William & Mary Law School in 2007. The former representative of Florida was also admitted to the Florida Bar in 2008. He worked in private practice during the early days of his career before launching his campaign in 2010 for state representative.

Per the Florida Bar, he is eligible to practice law.

Gaetz was briefly suspended from practicing law in 2021 as he was late on his fees. However, the bar soon lifted the suspension once he paid his dues.

Previously, Matt Gaetz faced s*x trafficking allegations. According to the Associated Press, the House Ethics Committee was investigating the allegations that the 42-year-old was a part of a scheme that involved the s*x trafficking of a 17-year-old girl.

The committee gave a public update in June in which they also threw light on whether Gaetz engaged in s*xual misconduct, and drug use, obstructed government investigations, and accepted improper gifts.

In 2023, the investigation reached a conclusion when the Biden administration declined to bring charges.

Gaetz has repeatedly denied all the allegations.

What did Donald Trump say about Matt Gaetz?

Matt Gaetz has been loyal to Trump for a long time. According to Newsweek, Trump announced that he had nominated Gaetz as his attorney general on Wednesday and spoke fondly of him.

He called the Congressman a "deeply gifted and tenacious attorney" while focusing on his education. The President-elect added that Gaetz has also "distinguished himself in Congress through his focus on achieving desperately needed reform at the Department of Justice."

In a post on his Truth Social platform, Trump also wrote,

"Few issues in America are more important than ending the partisan Weaponization of our Justice System."
"Matt will end Weaponized Government, protect our Borders, dismantle Criminal Organizations and restore Americans’ badly-shattered Faith and Confidence in the Justice Department."
"Matt will root out the systemic corruption at DOJ, and return the Department to its true mission of fighting Crime, and upholding our Democracy and Constitution. We must have Honesty, Integrity, and Transparency at DOJ. Under Matt's leadership, all Americans will be proud of the Department of Justice once again," read another post.

More information is awaited about Trump's cabinet.
