ABC News Journalist James Longman recently opened up about his family's long battle with mental illness in his memoir titled— The Inherited Mind. In the book, he details his father and father's brother's battle with schizophrenia and how his grandfather and father ultimately took their own lives all while his mother was also diagnosed with clinical depression.

James Longman married his husband Alex Brennan in 2022. Amid the pain and unanswered questions, James Longman credits his husband, Alex, with helping him navigate his own mental health struggles and the weight of his family’s history.

In an interview with B-Gay Magazine, James recalled how Alex saved him from suicidal thoughts in 2022. He said:

“Alex has really just been my savior... He’s the most beautiful human being, and if you find someone in your life who can get you through, that’s what you need."

In his book and interviews, James has emphasized the importance of understanding mental health, both in honoring his father’s life and in breaking the cycle of trauma for future generations. In an interview with ABC News 7, he said:

"You can inherit trauma, but you can also inherit healing, and I think that's amazing because it gives your children the chance to break these patterns."
