In a chilling development, the body of a 5-year-old, Joshua James McCoy was discovered in an Oregon forest. Now, his father Lawson Amos McCoy, is urging for transparency and the truth about what happened to his boy.
On November 13, 2024, autistic Joshua James McCoy vanished from his Bend, Oregon, home while his mother was napping. Numerous questions remain unanswered for Joshua's family and the local community as a result of the mysterious circumstances surrounding his death.
Lawson Amos McCoy, the father of the late Joshua James McCoy, stated to OregonLive.com on Thursday, November 14:
“I want the truth, plain and simple. I don’t care about anything else. My baby’s gone.”
What do we know about Joshua James McCoy's death?
The last known sighting of autistic Joshua McCoy occurred on Saturday night, November 9, at his family's Hauser, Oregon, home.
When his mother woke up at 5:30 p.m., Joshua was gone. According to the authorities, Joshua and his mother had fallen asleep together at 1 p.m.
Joshua's body was found just under two miles from the family home on Tuesday, Nov. 12, following a search that lasted for many days. Around 12:30 p.m. local time, the Coos County Sheriff's Office reported that the discovery was made.
In a media statement released on Facebook on November 13, the Coos County Sheriff's office wrote:
"Today, around 12:30 PM, Joshua was discovered deceased and found approximately 1.6 miles straight line distance North-West from the child’s residence, and almost 2 miles by road. The investigation is on-going and no additional information will be released at this time."
In the statement, the sheriff assured that the search had been careful and thorough because of the seriousness of the situation.
They thanked all the agencies and departments that are helping the Coos County Sheriff’s Office, including the FBI, Homeland Security, NCMEC, OSP, Coos Bay PD, Bandon PD, MP PD, Lincoln County Sheriff’s Office, and all seven CORSAR counties.
The exact cause of Joshua James McCoy's death remains unclear at the time of this article's publishing. An autopsy was performed by the Oregon State Medical Examiner’s Office, according to Sgt. Christopher W. Gill.

According to Amos McCoy, who created a GoFundMe page, the money gathered will pay for Joshua James McCoy's repatriation to Ohio for burial beside his great-grandparents, as well as transportation and burial expenses.
Donations will also help Amos McCoy, a disabled veteran, with daily living expenses, memorial costs to celebrate Joshua's life, private investigator services to look into Joshua's death, and counseling and therapy services.
With a listed goal of USD10K, the GoFundMe account for Joshua James McCoy has managed to raise about USD 9,400 already.
Meanwhile, the Coos County community also organized a vigil in Joshua's memory that was attended by over 200 people.
