On Friday, a massive fire broke out at a home in Jersey City, New Jersey. In the fire, a baby and a 17-year-old girl were rescued by the firefighters who were hailed by netizens.
A neighbor of the house that was engulfed in fire called the emergency services after hearing the girl screaming. The firefighters responded to 322 Princeton Avenue at around 1 p.m. Upon arrival, they found heavy fire and smoke conditions on the first floor of the house. The fire also spread to the neighboring houses on both sides.
Firefighters soon learned about a 15-month-old trapped in the house and took immediate action. Despite the zero visibility, they found and rescued the baby.
According to Eyewitness News, Jersey City Fire Chief Jack Johnson said,
"It (the baby) wasn't like laying on top of the bed, it was somehow against the wall - so it was difficult to find the baby, but they found it pretty fast and got it out."
While the baby was unconscious, it was still breathing and was rushed to the hospital alongside the 17-year-old. They both are in a stable condition now.
The neighbor who dialed 911 spoke with the local news outlets and revealed that the girl was watching her sibling when the fire broke out.
Tevin Mwangi, the neighbor, told News 12 New Jersey that he saw the teenager in a bizarre condition and learned about the fire.
"I just run. I see the house is on fire. She has no clothes on just a T-shirt and underwear so I give her my jacket and shoes and say, ‘Do you want to go to my car?’"
It was the girl who informed him about the baby trapped inside the house.
During an interaction with ABC 7 NY, Mwangi said,
"She's crying, coughing, has black smoke all over her body. So, I assumed something is going on."
