Tony Hinchcliffe has faced intense backlash since his controversial comments about Latino and Puerto Rican communities at Donald Trump's October rally at Madison Square Garden. In his speech, Hinchcliffe referred to Puerto Rico as a 'floating island of garbage and made an offensive remark about Latinos "loving to make babies."
His words quickly went viral, prompting widespread condemnation from Puerto Ricans and public figures like Ricky Martin, Richhie Torres, a republican representative, Bad Bunny, and Jennifer Lopez, to name a few.
Despite the ongoing criticism, Hinchcliffe has repeatedly defended his remarks on social media. He explained that he had even joked about his own mother during the speech, but people chose to interpret his words through a racial lens. Now, in his recent podcast Kill Tony, Hinchcliffe said:
"I apologize"
After a dramatic pause, he followed up the statement with:
“To absolutely nobody. Not to the Puerto Ricans, not to the whites, not to the Blacks, not to the Palestinians, not to the Jews and not to my own mother. I mocked my own mother during the set. Nobody clipped that. No headlines about me making fun of my own mother.”
During his live podcast, Tony Hinchcliffe defended his controversial remark, stating that it was grounded in a fact: Puerto Rico has been struggling with a significant landfill issue for years. He pointed out that the Biden administration allocated over $3 billion to address the problem.
“I guess I’m the only one who knew about this, unfortunately,” Hinchcliffe quipped.
While the statement may have had some basis in reality, it drew sharp criticism from lawmakers and political analysts. Some even suggested that his comments could have harmed Donald Trump's efforts to win over Puerto Rican voters.
However, Tony Hinchcliffe rubbished this analysis by reposting a report by The Daily Mail titled — 'How Trump flipped the U.S. county with the highest percentage of Puerto Rican voters' on his X account.
What else did Tony Hinchcliffe say in his Podcast?
In his latest Kill Tony podcast episode, Tony Hinchcliffe addressed the controversy surrounding his comments, stating:
“I just want to say that I love Puerto Ricans; they’re very smart people. They’re smart, they’re street smart, and they’re smart enough to know when they’re being used as political fodder. And right now, that is happening. And uh, I apologize to absolutely nobody.”
Tony Hinchcliffe continued, receiving applause from the live audience, and acknowledged that his speech at Trump’s rally wasn’t 'the best f***ing place' for such remarks. However, he stood firm, telling both 'the mainstream media' and offended people that his comedy is rooted in insult humor.
“I go hard, and that’s never going to change,” Hinchcliffe affirmed.
The controversy even sparked a defense from fellow comedian Jon Stewart, who opened ‘The Daily Show’, defending Hinchcliffe. Stewart stated:
“The guy’s really just doing what he does!”
Stewart added that he found Hinchcliffe’s insult very funny.
