A man in Utah is going viral for deliberately ramming his Subaru Outback into the Tim Dahle Mazda Southtowne dealership reportedly because they denied his return request. The man claimed that the car was "a lemon." He asked to return the vehicle, a request that the dealership denied; hence, he threatened to drive through the dealership's front door, which he did.
The video has since made its way to X, and in it, the man, identified as Michael Murray, can be seen speeding into the glass panels of the store in his grey Subaru at high speed. He then angrily steps out of his car, fires a slew of expletives, and slams the door.
The video has since triggered a wave of memes, pointed remarks, and jokes. Here's how one user reacted:
"I'd want to return a Subaru too."
The comments didn't stop there:
"This is what happens when you attempt to cheat the customer out of his complimentary pine tree air freshener," one user joked.
"I can’t defend what this dude did, but I can totally understand his frustration. Some car dealerships will sell lemons and are perfectly fine with screwing their customers over," another empathized.
"Looks staged. Why was someone recording with their cellphone at the exact spot where the car just happens to come through the window?" someone else questioned.
"Just don’t understand this logic. Not only is he now stuck with the car. It’s damaged & insurance isn’t gonna pay for it. He’s going to jail then he’s gonna have to pay for the dealership repairs. What??" another asked.
Many more weighed in:
"People are getting fed up with getting screwed by businesses and corporations," one user noted.
"This is a small-scale version of the United Health Care thing. Yes, car dealerships are full of crooks and liars and they absolutely will screw you over. But this is the wrong solution, and it just ends up doing more harm to this guy, who will now probably end up with a felony," another opined.
"No Return policies and laws are the problem here. If a car is a known lemon, or has issues, "As Is" stickers invite fraud by the Dealerships, if there is no way to return the car, and get ALL the money back, including taxes and fees," someone else stated.
"My mom once bought a lemon from a Pontiac dealership. They wouldn’t let her return it. She stood at the driveway holding a sign and warning every customer not to buy there. They gave her a new one 3 hours later," another shared.
Scores online empathized with the aggravator, while others found his reaction excessive.
Utah man fires expletives at a car dealership, swears to ram through the front doors with his car, then promptly follows through
Per News.com, an Australian outlet, Sandy Police revealed that the Utah man, 35, purchased his Subaru on Monday. However, hours later, he went back to the dealership claiming there was something wrong with his car and that it was a "lemon." However, per Deseret, the car was sold to him “as is,” which the police mentioned was written in the sales contract.
Per the police report, Murray claimed the dealership refused to issue a refund, and in response, he threatened to drive it through the main door. Reportedly, he followed through within minutes of commenting, and at about 4 p.m., cops received reports of the same. He was then promptly cuffed and taken into custody. At the time, about seven salesmen were standing near the main door.
Tyler Slade, general manager at Tim Dahle Mazada Southtowne, told Deseret News that Murray was looking for a car that fell within his $4,000 budget. He noted that the dealership had an old model Subaru, and unlike the other cars at the dealership, this one was a "mechanic’s special."
This meant that the customer was willing to undertake the risk of the vehicle and the dealership told him it was meant for customers with tighter budgets. Per Slade, however, the customer returned in an “emotionally charged” state, demanding a return.
Slate also revealed that by then, the money had already been deposited. “We could not calm him down,” he said. He noted that the dealership was willing to work with the man to resolve the matter, but he “storm(ed) out of the office,” cussed them out, and swore to drive through the glass panels.
As reported by News.com, while there were no injuries reported, the dealership was hit with damages worth $10,000.
