Taylor Lorenz, a Greenwich, Connecticut native and reporter who writes about internet culture, began to trend online, sparking curiosity about her real age after she declared to be 50 years old in a post on X. This is not the first time the accuracy of Lorenz’s age has come under scrutiny.
Lorenz's post saying she is 50 years old came after writer Nater Silver provoked her online to reveal her real age. However, Lorenz did not confess she was 50-years-old. She was only mocking Silver, saying he should assume she was 50 years old, as many people do online. Taylor Lorenz, who was born in 1984, is 40 years old.
Nate Silver and Taylor Lorenz's feud explored
It all began when writer Nate Silver shared Taylor Lorenz’s Wikipedia page, saying:
“Like just a basic thing but you should probably not trust a "journalist" who refuses to disclose the year in which they were born.”
In response, Lorenz took a shot at writer Nate Silver, seemingly suggesting he’s a coward for not engaging in a live substack discussion with her. Lorenz accused Silver of constantly taking shots at her beliefs without engaging in a discussion.
In response, Silver asked Taylor Lorenz to divulge her real birth date. Silver said:
“I'll do a Substack Live with @TaylorLorenz if she discloses which date she was born on.”
Lorenz, who was featured in Fortune magazine's 40 under 40 issue four years ago when she was 35, had previously declined to disclose any personal information, including her birth date, due to online harassment. Lorenz, whose Wikipedia says she was born between 1984 and 1987, has previously been accused of being much older than she claims to be. In response to Silver’s string of posts provoking her to reveal her real birth date, Lorenz said:
“Normal ppl” don’t have to leave their home because of constant violent threats from radicalized online weirdos. Normal ppl don’t have to conceal basic info about their lives because of misogynistic harassment campaigns. Just assume I’m 50! Are u too scared to talk to a 50-year-old woman?”
The post went viral online, with social media users claiming Lorenz admitted to being 50 years old. Social media users also demanded her 40 under 40 successful people feature in Fortune magazine be revoked.
However, Lorenz was only deriding Silver saying she was 50 years old.
Taylor Lorenz is not 50 years old
In a string of posts on X, Lorenz mocked social media users after they began to claim she was 50 years old. The claim stemmed from a sarcastic post Lorenz shared to mock writer Nate Silver, who asked her to divulge her real birth date. Several social media users also invoked the Fortune 40 under 40 issue, claiming she lied about her age four years ago. It should be noted that Fortune magazine fact-checks a person’s age before featuring them in the publication.
Social media user Alec Sears shared Lorenz’s post where she sarcastically claimed she was 50 years old in his X account. He said:
“Taylor Lorenz, who yesterday claimed she was 50 years old, was featured in Fortune's 40 Under 40.... 4 years ago. In that profile, she claimed she was 35. Which is it? Will @FortuneMagazine revoke her award?”
Lorenz sardonically responded:
“Will Fortune magazine revoke my award?”
After Lorenz’s post alleging she is 50 went viral online, several social media users also came to her defense. A user who claimed to have attended Greenwich High School with Lorenz confirmed she is 40 years old.
A social media user also unearthed an old Greenwich Times Newspaper clipping that mentioned Taylor Lorenz winning an award from the Art Society in 1999 in the 12-14 junior artists category. Lorenz, who received the award in 1999, was 14 years old at the time.
