MLK Day and the US presidential inauguration ceremony are two of the significant events that occur in January. Martin Luther King Jr. Day is an annual federal holiday, while the presidential inauguration ceremonies happen once every four years.
President-elect Donald Trump is getting inaugurated for the second time in 2025, which coincidentally is taking place on the same day as the birthday celebration of MLK. Being a rare occurrence, it is only the third time that a presidential inauguration ceremony has overlapped with Martin Luther King Jr. Day.
The first coincidence happened in 1997 when the second inauguration of Bill Clinton took place on Monday, January 20. Both special days synchronized again on the day of President Barack Obama's second inauguration on Monday, January 21, 2013. Obama had taken the oath on Sunday, but the inaugural ceremony took place the next day.
For the unversed, MLK Day is observed on the third Monday of January every year, while the inauguration ceremony usually takes place on January 20 (unless it's a Sunday). Furthermore, on January 20, 1986, Martin Luther King Jr. Day was observed as a federal holiday by the US government.
On the other hand, the presidential inauguration has been taking place on January 20 (or 21 occasionally) since 1937. Originally, the inauguration ceremony used to take place on March 4 (or 5), barring a few exceptions. In 1933, the 20th Amendment to the US Constitution brought about change, which the government implemented in 1937.
Donald Trump will now take the oath and assume the duties for his second term on MLK Day. Read on to learn more about the second inauguration of President-elect Donald Trump.
Donald Trump's second inauguration on MLK Day featured a performance from Carrie Underwood
The MLK Day presidential inauguration of Donald Trump will see a performance from Carrie Underwood. The country singer will perform "America the Beautiful" at the event.
The swearing-in ceremony of Donald Trump, as the 47th US President, will follow Underwood's performance. SCOTUS (Supreme Court of the United States) Chief Justice John Roberts will administer the oath taken by Trump. At the same time, JD Vance will be sworn in as Vice President, administered by Brett Kavanaugh.
The oath ceremony will take place at noon ET at the US Capitol building. Following the oaths and the president’s address, there will be a signing-in ceremony, inaugural luncheon, pass-in review, and parade.
The inauguration will also mark the inception of Donald Trump's second, non-consecutive, and final term as the US President. Trump won the presidential race against former VP Kamala Harris, who had replaced the 46th US President, Joe Biden, in the mid-campaign.
