Ryan Borgwardt, who was reported missing on 12 August while on a solo fishing trip, has created a stir with his latest video to the police. The father-of-three was reported as a missing kayaker in August.
The police searched Green Lake in Wisconsin for 54 days hoping to find him or his body. Only last week, the police found that he had fled to Eastern Europe.
According to BBC, the missing kayaker Borgwardt has now sent the authorities a 24-second video shot from an unknown apartment. In the video, he says:
“Good evening, it’s Ryan Borgwardt... Today is 11 November. It’s approximately 10 am by you guys. I’m in my apartment."
"I am safe, secure, no problem. I hope this works.” continued Borgwardt.
Green Lake County Sheriff Mark Podoll has responded to the video by informing that the authorities have been emailing Borgwardt to try and coax him to return to his family. Sherrif also said:
"The great news is he's still alive and well... The bad news is that we don’t know where exactly Ryan is, and he has not decided to return home.”
How exactly did Ryan Bogwardt, the missing kayaker manage to flee?
According to Sherrif Podoll, it all started when he flipped his kayak, said goodbye to his phone (now enjoying life underwater), and paddled to shore on an inflatable raft like a true survivalist.
He then hopped on an electric bike and powered 70 miles south to the state capitol. From there, he upgraded to a bus for Detroit, another to Canada, and eventually soared into the skies on a plane. Authorities launched their search when Borgwardt’s family raised the alarm on August 12.
What's next for the missing kayaker?
Sherriff Podoll hinted at the potential for legal trouble, saying he could face charges for throwing a wrench into the investigation of his own disappearance. But for now, the missing kayaker remains charge-free—just like the emotional plea his family and the authorities are sending out.
Chief Podoll said that they had been trying to 'pull at his heartstrings by sending out emotional emails.' In the press conference with all the subtlety of a Hallmark card, Podoll said:
“Christmas is coming... And what better gift he could give his kids as to be there for christmas with them?”
According to Sheriff Podoll, Borgwardt set up a $375,000 life insurance policy for his family back in January—a move that now seems more mysterious than thoughtful.
As for the missing man himself, he reportedly has an apartment tucked away somewhere in the world. However, how he’s footing the bills or keeping himself afloat remains anyone’s guess. Authorities are still scratching their heads over his financial Houdini act.
