A woman from Maui named Hannah Kobayashi has been reported missing after she did not get on her connecting flight to New York City last week, according to family members.
The 30-year-old Hannah Kobayashi reportedly departed from Maui on Friday, November 8. Kobayashi was supposed to take the connecting flight from Los Angeles to New York City, where she was scheduled to land on Saturday, November 9, according to Fox affiliate KHON.
"And then so I reached out to her, and I’m like, ‘Hey, are you in New York yet?’ And she’s like, ‘Not yet.’ And it was weird because the flight that she was supposed to go on had already flown," Brandi Yee, Kobayashi’s mother, told the outlet.
The family launched a fundraising campaign on GoFundMe to help look for missing Hannah Kobayashi
Larie Pidgeon, Hannah's aunt, stated that she was traveling to New York for a concert and a photography assignment. She was also intending to visit her family. However, when she missed her connecting flight in Los Angeles at 11 p.m. on November 8, she decided to go to The Grove for a Lebron James event. Kobayashi’s last pinned location was at Los Angeles International Airport (LAX); after that, none of her family members heard from her.
A friend of Kobayashi apparently received strange text messages from Kobayashi’s phone, stating, "I got tricked pretty much into giving away all my funds” and “For someone I thought I loved," reported KGMB.
"We know her phone’s off because it goes straight to voicemail," Sydni, Kobayashi’s sister, told KHON. "We’ve been trying to call and call and call, text. None of the texts are getting delivered. We can’t locate her phone."
Kobayashi’s cousin Emi Ko started a fundraising campaign on GoFundMe to support the search for Kobayashi.
"The last known contact with Hannah was an uncharacteristic text message sent on November 11th. Since then, her movements have been unclear, her phone has been shut off, and her family and friends have been working tirelessly to retrace her steps," Emi Ko wrote.
She further described Kobayashi as a warm, grounded, and wise soul who touched the lives of so many. She also mentioned the fundraiser will help cover the growing costs of the search efforts of the family, including travel costs and hiring private investigators to assist with the case.
Kobayashi's family members reportedly filed missing person reports with both LAPD and the LAX Police Department and are themselves starting their own search for Hannah. They are asking for the community’s help in searching for Kobayashi. She is described as 5 feet 10 inches tall, weighing about 140 pounds, with brown hair and brown eyes. She has a fair complexion with freckles on her skin.
"We're just trying to not be paralyzed, in a way, not think of the worst," Kobayashi’s aunt Pidgeon said.
Kobayashi's family members have traveled to Los Angeles and posted flyers and sought help from volunteers to help them search for her. They urge anyone with information about her whereabouts to contact Pidgeon at 845-750-3006.
