Texas Representative Kay Granger is reportedly living in a senior facility care after being disappeared from the public eye for six months. According to the reports, the Republican representative has not cast a vote since July and essentially kept her life private.
Rumors began to spread concerning her health issues as it was reported she was grappling with dementia and was being treated in a memory care unit. However, Granger's son Brandon confirmed to the Dallas Morning News on Friday that she began showing signs of dementia in recent months but denied other speculations and confirmed that she moved to an independent living community.
"There's nothing wrong with someone wanting to live in a community with other folks of their age," Brandon stated.
Kay Granger speaks out after being found to be living in a senior care facility
The 81-year-old Kay Granger was the first Republican woman elected in 1997 to represent Texas. She was also the first woman to serve as mayor of Fort Worth, Texas. After her public announcement to retire in 2025, Granger disappeared from the public eye and also did not run for reelection in November 2024. She was also absent during important votes, including disaster relief, the debt ceiling, and the US-Mexico border vote. People began suspecting her health issues to be the reason for her disappearance when a reporter from the Dallas Express reported Granger was allegedly being treated in a memory care facility. Granger's son denied the speculation as he said,
"They have a memory care facility there, but she's in an independent living facility. It's a nice condo." He continued by saying, "She's in a building with a lot of other folks her age that are super active that she really loves. She has exercise classes, she gets to be around people all the time, it's wonderful for her for this point in life."
In a recent statement, Granger admitted to dealing with health problems in the past year as she wrote,
"As many of my family, friends, and colleagues have known, I have been navigating some unforeseen health challenges over the past year. However, since early September, my health challenges have progressed, making frequent travel to Washington both difficult and unpredictable." She further thanked the staff member at the facility, "I am deeply grateful for the outpouring of care and concern over the past several days."
Following her absence during the most important times of the Republican Party, Rolando Garcia, a Republican Committeeperson commented,
"The fact that Kay Granger is unable to leave her nursing home to participate in the most important congressional vote of the year suggests she was already in visible decline when she ran for re-election in 2022."
There are no further details as to when Granger will be able to get back from the senior facility clinic and whether or not she'll continue her job.
