Five facts about Kilauea as Hawaii’s volcano roars back to life soaring 200 ft high

Kilauea volcano in Hawaii erupted not once or twice but thrice last year. While its eruptions paused for a brief period of time, the volcano has been back to spilling lava since Wednesday. While the volcano is roaring back, here are five interesting facts about it.


Things to know about Kilauea


1) It is allegedly the most active volcano in the world:

The volcano in Hawaii is reportedly the most active one, however, it is still compared to Eyjafjallajökull in Iceland, Sakurajima in Japan, and Mount Etna in Sicily.


2) The volcano is home to the goddess of volcanoes, Pele.

Pele is short for Pelehonuamea, who is known as the goddess of volcanoes and fire, according to Hawaiians. Their myth and culture say Pele has a wicked temper which is why she made her home in the crater of the volcano.


3) The volcano has been actively erupting for more than four decades

While the volcano is a regular on the news, its eruptions are continuously active. It has been spilling lava since 1983


4) Kilauea has more than two dozen craters

While most volcanoes are tall and have a clear caldera on their top. However, the volcano in Hawaii is low-elevation and has multiple craters. This is also the reason why the volcano is reportedly the most active one.


5) The volcano once had a golf course

The old clubhouse is situated on the east of the visitor center. It is still standing and has a few rooms filled with tourists.

When did Kilauea last erupt?

The last eruption of the volcano in Hawaii began in December 2024. While it started on December 23, it resumed flowing on Wednesday morning. The lava in the volcano was small in the beginning. However, it changed over time and turned into a fountain of about 200 feet.

The national park which is home to the factory and the volcanoes is currently flooded with visitors. Now, the observatory has confirmed that the heights of the volcano will increase with more gas.

According to a statement, the park's spokesperson said that it is filled with visitors.

"He park is already very busy with people eager to see the eruption and we expect visitation to increase as the news gets out again.

The Hawaii Volcanoes National Park has two of the world's most active volcanoes, i..e. Mauna Loa and Kilauea. What makes the volcano more interesting is that the public can also overlook the part. However, the lava is not posing any threat to the residents.
