On Saturday, October 12, 2024, multiple reports stated a gunman opened fire on the campus of Tennessee State University (TSU) in Nashville. Several websites, including The Hill, reported that a shooting on the TSU campus left one person dead and nine others injured. The report also stated that gunfire erupted on campus as the school was hosting homecoming celebrations.
Multiple social media posts also suggested the shooting occurred on campus at TSU during a homecoming game. Part of the caption in a social media post read:
“Tennessee State homecoming shooting leaves one dead, nine injured.”
Meanwhile, the report from The Hill stated:
“One person was fatally shot and nine others were injured after a gunman opened fire Saturday on the campus of Tennessee State University (TSU).”
However, shortly after, Tennessee State University issued a statement clarifying the shooting did not occur on the TSU campus or at Nissan Stadium during the homecoming game. The shooting took place near the TSU campus.
Tennessee State University shuts down on campus shooting reports
In a statement on X, TSU refuted reports that a shooting occurred on campus during the homecoming game. The school said the shooting did not occur on the TSU campus or the Nissan Stadium, where the homecoming game was held on Saturday, October 12, 2024. The statement said:
“Tennessee State University Family we are sharing this communication to clarify information regarding two incidents that occurred this evening. There was not a shooting on the TSU campus or at Nissan Stadium, during the homecoming game that may have been reported or passed on to you. Please share the communication to clear up any misinformation."
Shooting near TSU campus leaves one dead
According to CBS, the shooting reportedly occurred mere blocks from the Tennessee State University campus. The Tennessean newspaper reported the University sent a text alert to students on Saturday evening around 5:30 p.m. warning about an off-campus shooter.
CBS affiliate WTVF reported the shooting occurred mere blocks away from the TSU campus on Jefferson Street. The street was reportedly crowded with people gathered to see the homecoming parade.
Meanwhile, NBC News reported the shooting occurred at 5.10 p.m. after the homecoming parade had concluded. Police said the people were still lurking around the parking lots at the time of the incident. However, most of the crowd had left the area to see the Tennessee State Tigers-Eastern Illinois Panthers game in Nashville.
Police did not identify the shooter or the victims. However, they confirmed at least one person had died and nine others were injured, including one 12-year-old and two 14-year-olds.
It is unclear if a suspect was arrested at the scene.
