Tom Homan was indeed one of 140 people who had worked for Trump and played a vital role in writing proposals for the 900-page right-wing 'wish list' called Project 2025.
According to a CNN report, the immigration reform proposals listed in Project 2025 were drawn from the perspectives of former officials involved in Trump’s policies and Tom Homan (former ICE head) was one of them.
Now, President-elect Trump has announced the appointment of Tom Homan as the 'Border Czar' as part of his upcoming administration. Since the news, Tom Homan has appeared on Fox & Friends and when asked if deportations will be a major part of his policies as 'Border Czar', Homan said:
“I’ve been clear. President Trump’s been clear. Public safety threats and national security threats will be the priority because they have to be, they pose the most danger in this country,”
In the same interview, Homan also shared that he felt committed to tackling what he sees as the Biden administration’s border crisis. He explained that after years of criticizing current policies and advocating for stronger enforcement, he couldn’t turn down Trump’s invitation to return and address these issues firsthand.
He stated that not accepting the role would feel hypocritical, given his vocal stance on necessary border reforms.
Days before he was appointed 'border czar', Tom Homan also did a 60-minute interview with CBS News, when talking about mass deportation, he noted:
"I always hear people say that the talk over mass deportation is racist, is threatening to the immigrant community. It is 'not' threatening to the immigrant community, it should be threatening to the 'illegal' immigrant community."
The reporter then went on to ask Tom Homan what the largest deportation in American history would look like to him. Homan chose to address it as:
"Let me tell you what it is not going to be first. It is not going to be a mass sweep of neighborhoods or building concentration camps... there will be targeted arrests"
What is Project 2025 that Tom Homan was also a part of drafting?
Project 2025 is a plan created by the Heritage Foundation, a leading conservative think tank in Washington. The Heritage Foundation has made similar policy proposals for future Republican administrations since 1981, starting with Ronald Reagan.
The Project 2025 report was released in April 2023 but didn’t get much attention until early 2024, when Democratic lawmakers started opposing it.
They created a 'Stop Project 2025 Task Force' and even set up a tip line to gather inside information, claiming there is a hidden agenda behind it, including a list of executive orders for Trump.
While Democratic leaders brought up Project 2025 often, Trump distanced himself from it in July 2024, saying he didn’t know anything about it and disagreed with some of its ideas.
Despite this, many people behind Project 2025 were former Trump advisers, like Paul Dans, who was once Trump’s chief of staff at the Office of Personnel Management.
Another key contributor, Russell Vought, had served as a Trump official and worked on the Republican National Committee’s 2024 policy. The Heritage Foundation’s president, Kevin Roberts, also played a role in the project and is close to JD Vance, the Republican vice-presidential candidate.
Over 100 conservative organizations helped with the project.
Project 2025 outlines four main policy goals: strengthening the family as a core part of American life, reducing the power of the government, protecting the nation’s borders and sovereignty, and securing individual freedoms based on God-given rights.
