The fate of both, CapCut and Lemon8 hangs in the air amidst the TikTok ban. CapCut, and Lemon8, both of which are owned by ByteDance are currently banned in the United States. CapCut, a TikTok video editing app that has over a billion downloads is currently displaying the following message to its users:
“Sorry, CapCut isn't available right now. A law banning CapCut has been enacted in the U.S. Unfortunately, that means you can't use CapCut for now. Rest assured, we're working to restore our service in the U.S. Please stay tuned! In the meantime, you can still manage your account data.”
Lemon 8, touted as the next TikTok is also displaying a similar message:
"Sorry, Lemon8 isn't available right now. A law banning Lemon8 has been enacted in the U.S. Unfortunately, that means you can't use Lemon8 for now. We are fortunate that President Trump has indicated that he will work with us on a solution to reinstate Lemon8 once he takes office. Please stay tuned!"
The recent TikTok ban in the United States has had a ripple effect, with other ByteDance-owned apps going dark for U.S.-based users. In addition to CapCut and Lemon8, several other ByteDance-owned apps have been banned or become unavailable in the U.S. Gauth, an AI-powered app designed to assist students with homework is on the list. The ban also includes Hypic, a popular photo editing tool, that incorporates AI to deliver editing features, which are widely used by content creators.
Lark, a communication platform similar to Slack that provides workspace collaboration tools for businesses and teams and Tokopedia has also been banned. These apps, though diverse in functionality, are all part of ByteDance's expansive portfolio and are now inaccessible in the U.S.

CapCut is a free video editing app that helps users create and edit videos, making it easier to add effects, transitions, music, and other creative elements to their content. It’s especially popular with people who make videos for platforms like TikTok, YouTube, and Instagram.
CapCut is being banned alongside TikTok because both apps are owned by ByteDance, a company based in China. The U.S. government has concerns about the data privacy of users on TikTok and other apps owned by ByteDance. These apps, including CapCut, have been banned or made unavailable in the U.S. as part of efforts to address concerns regarding potential misuse of users' data.
