Davis Moturi, a Minneapolis man of color, faced life-threatening injuries after his neighbor shot him in the neck. Moturi's wife revealed that he had called the police several times to report his alleged racist neighbor, John Sawchak. However, the police reportedly did not take any action that could have saved Moturi from being shot.
As a result, Davis Moturi suffered a gunshot wound in his neck that left him hospitalized for days. The bullet also traveled down and fractured his T7 and two ribs. Besides the life-threatening issues, he also faced a concussion and had a chest tube inserted inside him to drain blood from his lungs. For the long-term treatment, his wife, Caroline Moturi set up a fundraiser via GoFundMe.
While her initial goal was to cover the hospital treatment cost, she has updated everyone that she has to quit work to take care of her husband. Therefore, she has set a $100,000 target. The donations quickly crossed $28,000. At the time of writing, the donations crossed the $50,000 mark after more than 880 people came forward to help Davis Moturi.
In her plea for donations, Caroline narrated the entire incident. She claimed that the alleged harassment from Sawchak began in late 2023, after she and her husband bought a new house. Caroline added,
"Shortly after moving in our neighbor began harrasing us, threatening us, and stalking us. Despite multiple calls to the police for help we were consistently informed nothing could be done. At one point an officer who responded to our distress told us to 'just move out.'"
Caroline Moturi, who is white, claimed that her husband was racially harassed by their neighbor several times, but the police did not take any serious action.
Ultimately, Sawchak shot at Moturi, who nearly lost his life. A surveillance camera caught the tragic incident and the suspect was charged with multiple counts of attempted murder, harassment, and stalking. However, almost a week after the incident, Sawchak was taken into custody by Minneapolis Police.
Following the incident, netizens are furious at Minneapolis police.
Minneapolis Police reacts to Davis Moturi's case
According to CNN, Minneapolis Police Chief Brian O'Hara said, "We failed this victim 1000%," at a press conference on Sunday. He alleged that the police officers "somehow did not act urgently enough" to prevent Davis Moturi from getting shot.
O'Hara further revealed that John Sawchak surrendered on Monday after an hour-long standoff with police. He has allegedly denied all the allegations. His first court appearance was on Tuesday when he was told that he would not get bail.
He was also explained that he would have to pay $1 million to be released on bail with no conditions. If he paid $600,000, he would be ordered to live at a place where he would have no contact with the involved parties.
His next hearing is scheduled for November.
