Construction worker killed in tragic accident at Villa Park High School
On Thursday, a construction worker lost his life in a tragic accident while working at the school. The authorities have not yet disclosed the nature of the accident.
According to the students of Villa Park High School, construction was going on in their gym area.
"They took out all the new bleachers, redid the floor, new air conditioners, and everything. I know there are new bleachers that were delivered a couple of weeks ago that they've been working on," said student Landon Hunt to ABC7 News.
Hunt further explained he didn't know what happened at first:
"I was pretty scared. I thought it was a shooting or something because I wasn't sure," he said.
Student photos revealed a large section taped off, where several construction workers, paramedics, and police officers were present.
"I go to the bathroom and see a bunch of ambulances. And I see a guy on one of the beds—the stretchers. And then they put him into the ambulance," Alex Miron, a student at the school, described to NBC News Los Angeles.
Classes at the Villa Park High School were in session at the time of the accident. However, according to the students, they didn’t see or hear anything until they received a campus announcement, instructing them to stay inside their classrooms and telling them it was a lockdown. The students were further informed that there was an emergency.
"There is no current danger to the Villa Park High School campus or surrounding community," stated the school district in a statement.
The school released a statement about the accident. They also clarified that no students or staff members were injured in the accident. Officials, including representatives from the California Division of Occupational Safety and Health (CAL/OSHA), are investigating the cause behind the accident. No additional details about the nature of the accident or the identity of the construction workers have been released as of now.
