Robert F Kennedy Jr, popularly known as RFK Jr, was nominated by President-elect Donald Trump to head the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS). The nomination of the scion of the renowned American political family, The Kennedys, was hailed by several netizens.
RFK Jr, the son of Robert Francis Kennedy, served as the Attorney General in his brother and former President John F Kennedy's cabinet. Following his brother's assassination, Robert Francis Kennedy ran successfully for the United States Senate from New York in 1964. RFK Jr's father was assassinated after he announced his candidacy for the Democratic presidential nomination.
Amid the nomination, an old video of a young boy purported to be young RFK Jr showing his uncle, President John F. Kennedy, his pet salamander in the Oval Office has resurfaced online. The captain on the video shared by X user Johnny Maga said:
“1961: A young Robert Kennedy Jr. shows his uncle, President John F. Kennedy, his pet salamander in the Oval Office. 2024: RFK Jr. becomes the United States Health and Human Services Secretary to ensure today’s children grow up in a world without poison.”
The post was flooded with a volley of comments from social media users, who welcomed Kennedy's potential appointment into President-elect Trump’s cabinet. A social media user said:
“Children are the future!”
The remark was a nod to John F Kenndy’s memorable 1963 speech at the United States Committee for UNICEF where he said:
“Children are the world's most valuable resource and its best hope for the future.”
Several social media users followed up with similar reactions.
“Little did JFK know that little boy would grow up to help save America from the deep state that killed him! RFK Jr. is going to Make America Healthy Again!,” A user said.
“Incredible moment in American history,” Another user added.
Another post noted, “JFK is smiling down on his nephew.”
A social media user echoed the statement and said “I’m excited for this new year & what a great clip.”
RFK Jr. has six brothers and four sisters
Kennedy's parents - Robert F. Kennedy and Ethel Kennedy, were married in June 1950. The couple reportedly welcomed 11 children, including RFK Jr, between the years 1951 and 1968 (Via People Magazine).
Shortly before throwing his support behind Trump, Kennedy announced his campaign for the presidential election, which was denounced by members of his own family.
In August 2024, after he announced his campaign for president, in a statement signed by Kathleen Kennedy Townsend, Courtney Kennedy, Kerry Kennedy, Chris Kennedy and Rory Kennedy, the siblings said:
"We believe in Harris and Walz. Our brother Bobby's decision to endorse Trump today is a betrayal of the values that our father and our family hold most dear. It is a sad ending to a sad story."
Kennedy is married to Curb Your Enthusiasm actress Cheryl Hines. The couple tied the knot in 2014. The couple share seven children. Hines, who was previously married to Paul Young, has a daughter, Catherine. Meanwhile, Kennedy is the father of six adult children.
