A GoFundMe titled 'Support ParentsUSA's Fight for Brit's Parental Rights' set up for Georgia mom, Brittany Patterson, who was arrested for reckless conduct after her son walked alone in a town raised about $54,000.
Brittany Patterson was arrested on October 30 by the Fannin County Sheriff’s Department in front of her kids on suspicion of reckless conduct after the police found her 10-year-old son, Soren, walking alone in the nearby town, a mile away from their home.
If Brittany is found guilty of the charge, she could be imprisoned for up to one year and fined $1000.
Events leading to the arrest of Brittany Patterson
According to reports, Brittanny Patterson had to leave her 10-year-old son (now 11) with his grandfather at their home in Mineral Bluff on October 30, 2024, because she had taken her other son to the hospital.
Later she received a call from the Fannin County Sheriff’s Department stating that her son was walking alone in the town. According to an NBC news report, Brittany said that when she got the call from the sheriff's department she was more annoyed than worried to hear her son left home without telling her.
"It's not a super dangerous or even dangerous-at-all stretch of road. I wasn't terrified for him or scared for his safety," she said.
Based on reports, a witness informed the police about a juvenile in the roadway, even though the boy told the witness that he did not need help. The deputies then drove her son, Soren, home and left only to come back later to arrest and charge Brittany on suspicion of reckless conduct. The arrest warrant accuses Brittany of "willingly and knowingly did endanger the bodily safety of her juvenile son".
In an interview with NBC, Brittany said she felt angry and frustrated at what had happened but tried to remain calm for the sake of her children. She was later released after paying a bond of $500.
Though the authorities have offered to drop the charges against Brittany Patterson if she signs a form outlining a safety plan for her children, that involves a GPS tracker in her son's phone, she refused to do so because she believes she did nothing wrong.
According to Brittany and her lawyer, they will fight the case but have not decided to sue the authorities yet. Regarding the arrest, Brittany Patterson's lawyer, David DeLugas told NBC,
"Are all parents going to have to put GPS on their child? The parents get to decide for their children unless it is unreasonably dangerous."
