The fateful DC plane crash involving an American Airlines flight reportedly has no survivors. The incident happened on January 29, 2025, at 9 p.m.. After the mishap, two black boxes were recovered from the debris, according to the latest updates by the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB).
Officials have sent the black boxes for lab analysis. Investigators thoroughly examined the crash, but NTSB suggests that it is still unclear if human error or mechanical failure was the cause. NTSB Chairwoman, Jennifer Homendy, addressed a press conference on January 30, 2025, where she said:
“We are here to assure the American people that we are going to leave no stone unturned in this investigation. We are going to conduct a thorough investigation of this entire tragedy.”
Todd Inman, spokesperson for the ongoing investigation, said NTSB would provide a preliminary report within 30 days of the incident. While answering a question Homandy mentioned that flight data recorders from the American Airlines aircraft were not recovered at the time of the press conference. She added:
“We know they are there. They are under water. This is not unusual for the NTSB. We have many times recovered flight data recorders in water.”
Jennifer Homendy also said it was necessary to give them time to verify the facts from the DC plane crash incident. She said that although the NTSB has a substantial amount of data, that information can only be shared after proper verification, adding:
“We need to verify information. We need to take our time to make sure it is accurate. That’s best for you, that’s important for the families. It’s important for legislators who are seeking answers to try to figure out what they are going to do about this.”
American Airlines launched a family assistance facility
When asked about the conditions in the tower concerning performance issues with the controllers, Todd Inman said the NTSB was still forming groups for investigation. However, the controllers have Union representation which will be working with the NTSB.
Interviews will be conducted after which they will be analysed and transcribed. Although it would be a long process, Inman said they would explore all of it.
He also mentioned some of the families whose members have been involved in the American Airlines flight accident were still being notified. A family assistance facility has been launched the PSA and American Airlines. The Disaster Assistance team has also been coordinating with them. He added:
“It is customary that at some point if the families wish to go to part of the accident site, that we would arrange such a thing but it will only be when we know that it’s safe. We have the correct perishable evidence and we can do it in the proper modesty that should be for those family members.”
As per the ongoing investigation, evidence was not conclusive enough to suggest any passengers could escape the aircraft through slides or chutes. Inman mentioned that the collision was a rapid impact. However, more information will need to be verified.
According to ABC News, the passenger list for American Airlines flight 5342 may be released soon, according to Kansas Gov. Laura Kelly. The delay is due to the airline notifying the victims' families, including those overseas.
