Barbara Bradley, a retired woman living on a fixed Social Security income in the Green River Cove area, was severely affected by Hurricane Helene.
In a GoFundMe account set up by her son-in-law Brian Estes, he mentions that the home, which Barbara Bradley had lived in for over 50 years, was destroyed by flooding. The water level reached above the light switches, causing significant damage to the structure. The post also mentions that without insurance and with her car completely totaled due to the hurricane, Barbara now requires assistance to rebuild her home.
In a community effort, the GoFundMe account has managed to raise over $115,354, which, according to the organizer, will be used to:
"Get her home replaced. Every penny helps, and will add up in the end. It will be spent on the expenses of getting another home put on her property." wrote Brian Estes on the GoFundMe page.
What is Barbara Bradley's story?
In a video now viral on TikTok and Facebook, Barbara Bradley is seen on the premises of her now-wrecked home, explaining her story and urging people to help her. She starts with:
"I'm Barbara Bradley, I am 74-years-old. This is where my husband Wilder Bradley and I used to live."
As the camera zooms out to the ruins of the house, she emotionally continues:
"We lived here from 1972 with him and he died in January 2019. And this is what's left after the flood."
Holding out a bible in her hand and claiming that it was the last thing she had left after the flood, Barbara Bradley said:
"I did find the bible that he (Wilder Bradley) had give me. And inside it was my mom's obituary which I am glad I found. And FEMA don't seem to worry about it."
She concluded the video by saying she had a GoFundMe account set up for her, but "it's not doing that great." With her voice seemingly breaking up, she said:
"All I want to do is come home. I need a place to put back here"
People from her community are rallying to help and urging others to donate for Barbara Bradley so that she can rebuild her life. A Facebook user posted:
"Please stand by for her video on TikTok, if you’re in a position to donate, please do. Let’s help her out, I know I have very good people on my facebook!"
A neighbor who goes by the username Fast Fred and claims to have known Barbara Bradley all his life also posted the video on his Facebook account, urging people to donate. He wrote:
"Helene may have struck over forty days ago but the suffering has not ended. This is my wonderful neighbor Barbara Bradley. I have known her most of my life. She needs help to rebuild and has grandchildren and great-grandchildren to look after. Please consider contributing to her GoFundMe at"
Although the original goal of the GoFundMe account for Barbara Bradley was set at $50K, in his post, Barbara's neighbor also claims that It will cost around $100k to replace her home with a basic double-wide trailer. He also shared that he has donated personally to help Barbara get back on her feet.
