Great white sharks are often considered to be aggressive aquatic animals due to their sharp teeth and large bites. However, one must understand that they are not mindless killers. If they come across a human, they might bite to investigate, but a person's body is not their preference for food.
They often prefer eating seals and sea lions over humans. However, these white ones do have a high number of attacks in their account among which 57 fatalities were reported.
Recently, two juvenile white sharks were spotted by fishermen off the coast of Huntington Beach, California. The incident has created a concerning situation for the visitors. The lifeguards of the city revealed how the two cetaceans were caught by the fishermen, but they freed themselves by biting the lines.
Taking to their Instagram handle, the lifeguards posted a warning sign along with a long caption explaining the situation. They added,
"These sightings remind us that the sea is their home, and we share these waters with marine life of all kinds."
The lifeguards revealed Huntington Beach Fire Department Marine Safety Division has sought assistance from the California Department of Fish and Wildlife following the incident.
They also confirmed how thorough shoreline and water checks have been conducted so far. The number of patrols along the pier and the beach have also been increased. Moreover, the HB-1 Police helicopter performed a flyover of the area to check if the giant fish were still there.
"No sharks have been observed during these enhanced patrols and searches; however, we will continue monitoring the area and maintaining increased patrols," they further announced.
How to stay safe at the beach amid sharks' warnings?
The lifeguards of Huntington Beach have shared ten safety tips for people visiting a beach where sharks have been recently found swimming.
They have asked people to surf or dive with others and remain in an area where they can easily find assistance. People who have open wounds or are bleeding are asked to stay away from the water.
Visitors are also advised to stay away from the water during dusk, dawn, and night. Moreover, they also must avoid areas near stream mouths or channels. Sharks are also attracted to high-contrast clothing and jewelry and excessive splashing.
Swimmers are also advised to react calmly when they see a shark and leave the water quickly. Sighting of dolphins is also not a good sign as they are prey to bigger fishes. Staying away from fishermen is also advised.
At last, one must always call a nearby lifeguard in any problematic situation and surf near them.
In the past week, two other shark-related incidents happened. In one of which, a tiger shark nearly ate a diver.
