The latest eruption of Kilauea volcano in Hawaii began on December 23, 2024. Since then, many tourists have been visiting Hawai'i Volcanoes National Park. However, a tourist family recently faced a tragedy as their son allegedly almost fell off a 400-foot cliff.
The National Park Service recently shared details about the incident in their latest press release. They revealed how the incident occurred when several families were watching the glowing lava in the volcano,
"As families watched lava glow within Kaluapele at sunset last night, a shocking scene unfolded in a closed area beyond the post-and-cable barrier at Kīlauea Overlook."
Soon a toddler ran towards the cliff's edge. His mother managed to save him otherwise, in a split second, he would have fallen.
"A toddler wandered off from his family and in a split second, ran straight toward the 400-foot cliff edge. His mother, screaming, managed to grab him in the nick of time just a foot or so away from a fatal fall. Disaster was averted, and the shaken family departed. A Christmas to remember?" the release added.
The National Park Service has urged tourists to stay on the trail and ensure their kids are close to them while watching Kilauea Volcano.
Park Superintendent Rhonda Loh also ensured that the park has several safety measures in place to keep tourists safe. However, Loh urged, that tourists also must act responsibly while visiting such places.
"The hazards that coincide with an eruption are dangerous, and we have safety measures in place including closed areas, barriers, closure signs, and traffic management."
"Your safety is our utmost concern, but we rely on everyone to recreate responsibility. National parks showcase nature’s splendor but they are not playgrounds."
Soon after the volcanic eruption took place, officials urged tourists to ensure their safety before visiting the park. Moreover, they have also asked visitors to check the air quality before planning their trip.
