Shamsud-Din Jabbar was identified as a suspect in the New Orleans truck attack. On January 1, 2024, at 03:15 am in New Orleans, a Ford pick-up truck allegedly driven by a U.S. Army veteran, Shamsud-Din Jabbar (42), rammed into crowds gathered on Bourbon Street in French Quarter. Police said the "very intentional" attack killed 15 people and injured 35 others.
Jabbar, who was carrying a flag associated with the Islamic State (IS) group in his vehicle at the time of the New Orleans attack, was also armed and fired on law enforcement, injuring two officers. He also had improvised explosives, including two pipe bombs in his vehicle. New Orleans police subsequently killed the suspect.
Meanwhile, Jasmine Brand reported that Shamsud-Din Jabbar’s wife, Shaneen Jabbar, obtained a restraining order against him over threats and “potential harm to her and their child.”
In the wake of the New Orleans truck attack, a YouTube video with a man matching the name and description of the terror suspect Shamsud-Din Jabbar began circulating online. In the video uploaded in 2020, Jabbar was heard describing himself as a former army veteran turned real estate agent. The YouTube video said:
"I'm Shamsud-Din Jabbar, Team Lead for the Midas Group and Property Manager at Blue Meadow Properties.”
The 2020 video triggered a barrage of comments online, with many wondering how a real estate agent could commit the horrific act. A social media user reacting to the 2020 video said:
“A married real estate agent did this?”
“So how did this normal man have a New Year's breakdown and kill multiple people?,” Another user added.
“Seems like a legit businessman. I don’t understand this! There has to be more to this story!” a social media user noted.
What we know about the New Orleans truck attack suspect Shamsud-Din Jabbar
Former News anchor Kevin Steele, who shared the 2020 video on Facebook, said that Shamsud-Din Jabbar was a Central High School grad born and raised in Beaumont, Texas, and later moved to Houston.
BBC reported a now-removed LinkedIn profile, which had Shamsud-Din Jabbarlisted as a professional who studied at Georgia State University from 2015 to 2017, graduating with a degree in computer information systems. He reportedly worked for the US Army in human resources and IT before he was discharged.
In the 2020 YouTube video, Jabbar confirmed he spent 10 years in the military as a human resources and IT specialist. He said:
“I spent 10 years in the military as a human resource specialist and IT specialist where I learnt the meaning of great service and what it means to be responsive and take everything seriously. So I’ve taken those skills applied to my career as a real estate agent.”
BBC reported that Jabbar was deployed to Afghanistan from February 2009 to January 2010. He was reportedly married twice, with his first marriage ending in 2012 and his second marriage lasting from 2017 to 2022.
Jabbar also had a criminal record for traffic and theft incidents.
