A high schooler and ice hockey player named Connor Kasin met an untimely demise after losing consciousness on the rink during a charity game. The 17-year-old was a student of Massapequa High School and was playing at the Town of Oyster Bay Skating Center in Bethpage.
Massapequa Public Schools Superintendent William Brennan issued a statement honoring the departed, as reported by Greater Long Island:
"Connor was a cherished member of our school community, known for his kindness, positivity, enthusiasm and big smile. He had a way of bringing light and joy to those around him, and his absence will be felt deeply by all of us."
Connor Kasin was playing for a charity event in honor of another departed teenager the day he died
On Sunday, December 1, the Sharks Elite Youth Hockey took to Facebook to confirm Connor Kasin's passing. He played defense for the team and was a senior at his High School. Per News 12, "civilians" rushed to his aid at the game, with someone performing CPR in an attempt to revive him.
Not long after, the cops and paramedics showed up and rushed him to a nearby hospital. It was there that the medics pronounced him dead. Per Brennan, Kasin was hit with a "sudden medical event." He said in a letter to all the parents and students of the school:
"It is heartbreaking to report that Connor did not survive. His passing is devastating to the Massapequa community, and we offer our deepest condolences to Connor's family and friends."
It went on, in part:
"His passing is devastating to the Massapequa community, and we offer our deepest condolences to Connor’s family and friends."
Nassau County Police have yet to reveal the teenager's cause of death, and the details surrounding the incident remain scarce. They also noted that while investigations are underway, "there is no criminality suspected."
The Long Island youth hockey organization PAL Ice Hockey also took to Facebook to pay their respects to Connor Kasin's passing:
"Our hearts are heavy as we extend our deepest condolences to the Kasin family, Connor’s teammates, coaches and classmates from the LI Sharks and Massapequa Chiefs. Our thoughts and prayers are with you all during this unimaginable time. May Connor #37 rest in eternal peace."
GoFundMe launched in Connor Kasin's name, family declined the funds
Aurod Seraji initially launched a GoFundMe on the family's behalf in the hopes of raising money to cover all the funeral and medical expenses incurred, though at the time of writing, it has officially been disabled. The page garnered $7,102, all of which will be "refunded within the next few business days." The page mentions that the "family has declined the fundraiser."

He was a great person, great friend, and he had a bright future. In this difficult time, we are asking for your support to help cover funeral expenses and provide for his family as they navigate this unimaginable loss."
The statement then calls on everyone to contribute, "no matter the size," noting that it will be "deeply appreciated as we come together to honor his memory and offer comfort to those who loved him most." It ends with a thank you to everyone for the kindness and support shown.
Massapequa High School disclosed, per People Magazine, that they will be offering free counseling on Sunday "for students and families who were close to Connor," including his teammates.
Per Greater Long Island, Connor Kasin was participating in a charity match initiated in honor of Sabrina Navaretta. She was a 19-year-old alum of Syosset High School, located nearby. In December 2023, she lost her life in a car crash. The initiative aims to offer scholarships for seniors and help and resources to families dealing with the loss of a child.
