Will Sonny become General Hospital's latest 'heart attack' victim?

An average and heartwarming General Hospital Christmas Eve scene turned into so much more when Sonny was suddenly overcome with chest pains, which he chose to ignore. Could it have been a hint to Sonny's next big story?

An evening of peace and joy on General Hospital

Sonny (Maurice Benard) had a relatively uneventful Christmas Eve, which is unusual in the life of Port Charles' top mobster. His only drama seemed to come early in the evening when he had a few tense moments with Jack Brennan (Charles Mesure) at Carly's (Laura Wright) house.

Sonny's time in Rice Plaza with Kristina (Kate Mansi) and Laura (Genie Francis) was pleasant, as were his bonding moments with Kristina when they got home and discussed a better future ahead. After Kristina went to bed, Sonny finished his drinks and headed to bed himself, but as he walked to his room, he clutched his chest and seemed like he couldn't catch his breath.

The moment was fleeting, and Sonny seemed to brush it off, but it looked like a sign of things to come on a show that has had more than one unusual heart attack of late.

A real heart attack...or Digitalis?

When Sam (Kelly Monaco) died from a heart attack on Halloween, everyone around her was puzzled as she was a younger woman in perfect health. A heart condition would have been caught before her pre-surgical testing, but it wasn't. Things began making sense for the hospital staff when the autopsy report showed the heart attack was artificially induced with an overdose of a heart medication called Digitalis.

When Dex Heller (Evan Hofer), a man in his 20s, died from a heart attack following a non-serious stab wound and a routine surgery, Elizabeth (Rebecca Herbst) knew there was something strange going on. While Dex's autopsy report is not back yet, we can guess what it will say, but is this what is going on with Sonny? Did Cyrus (Jeff Kober) get to him before he landed in a hospital?

Cyrus certainly has a bone to pick with Sonny. He tried to send him to jail last year, but Sonny thwarted him. Sonny also began the year by beating Cyrus to a pulp, but Nina (Cynthia Watros) convinced him not to press charges. We still don't know Cyrus' true motive for killing Sam, but we can guess he killed Dex because the cop was getting too close to the truth. Is Cyrus now feeling bold and decided to slowly induce a heart attack for Sonny?

Perhaps there is no foul play at all, and GH is going to give us a compelling story about a genuine heart condition in a more mature character. Sonny is in his 60s but likes to think of himself as young and invincible. Maybe he is not, and life is starting to catch up with him. Or maybe Cyrus finally found a way to beat his mortal enemy...
