Will General Hospital's Elizabeth be Ava's unlikely hero?

General Hospital's Ava and Sonny are gearing up for yet another court battle to see who will win custody of Avery. It's not the first court battle for Avery or even the second, but hopefully, it will be the last. Which parent will win in the end? That just may depend on Elizabeth.

A walk to remember

We should have known this week that something consequential would happen when Elizabeth (Rebecca Herbst) agreed to go for another walk with Ric (Rick Hearst). When he showed up at the General Hospital nurses' station with flowers last fall and asked Elizabeth to go for a walk, they ended up witnessing Alexis (Nancy Lee Grahn) throwing a gun off the footbridge.

Even before Liz got on the elevator with Ric for their February walk, she mentioned last year's incident and how she didn't need anything consequential from this latest outing. Too bad she had no such luck.

A simple winter walk in the park led to an encounter with Ava (Maura West), Kristina (Kate Mansi), Avery (Ava and Grace Scarola), and Donna (Scarlett Brielle) that could lead Elizabeth into a courtroom.

As soon as Ric spotted Ava trying to take Avery home when she didn't have the legal right to do so, he got her out of the park and into her apartment to try and talk sense into her. Poor Elizabeth was left with Avery and Donna's babysitter, who nobody can talk sense into.

Liz was forced to listen to Kristina rant and rave about the horrors of Ava. How dare Ava think she had the right to see her child? In Kristina's delusional mind, Ava should have no rights at all. Since Kristina has no filter, she saw nothing wrong with declaring that if she couldn't have her daughter, then Ava couldn't have Avery.

The look on Liz's face proved that Nurse Baldwin knew how nutty that comment was, but an oblivious Kristina missed it.

Ric's best witness

While Kristina was spouting off her usual nonsense about a baby meant for her sister and fathered by her sister's partner, Ric promised Ava that he would help her win her court battle against Sonny (Maurice Benard) free of charge. That declaration led to a moment of passion, proving how far Ric would go for Ava.

Something tells us Elizabeth will mention her conversation with Kristina to Ric and he will decide that Elizabeth must testify to prove that Sonny is only suing for custody for revenge. Amazingly, that is even the truth. Sonny decided that Ava couldn't be with Avery anymore after Ava leaked that recording of Natalia's (Eva LaRue) homophobic remarks against Kristina and Blaze. He then doubled down on the fight after Kristina claimed Ava pushed her out a window, leading to the death of baby Irene.

Elizabeth didn't want any complications from her walk with Ric, but it looks like she might end up on a witness stand swearing to tell the whole truth and nothing but.
