In the world of sports, General Hospital star and journalist Stephen A. Smith has quite a bit going on. He’s the executive producer and commentator for ESPN First Take, where he and co-host Max Kellerman discuss sports news. He’s also an analyst for everything involving the NBA and appears on such shows as NBA Countdown and SportsCenter, as well as various basketball game airings. Aside from being a writer and radio show host, he hosts and is co-executive producer for his own show, Stephen A's World, where he talks about all things sports-related.
But outside of that, Smith appears on GH as Brick and has become beloved by the fans who are always excited when he stops into Port Charles. He first played a brief part as a reporter on the show in 2007 and was eventually asked back to take on the larger role of Brick. In May 2023, he appeared on the Tamron Hall Show and explained that on First Take, he mentioned that he was a huge General Hospital fan. GH executive producer Frank Valentini caught that particular episode and invited him to play a character on the soap. While he was there, Valentini approached him and asked:
“Do you have time to do this?” I said, “What do you mean?” He says, ‘We want to make this a recurring role for you.”
And he’s been appearing on the show ever since.
Who is Brick on General Hospital?
Whenever he’s needed on GH, Smith steps into the role of Brick, a tech guru whose skills rival that of computer hacker Damian Spinelli (Bradford Anderson), and they have the same boss: Mafia don Sonny Corinthos (Maurice Benard). Despite his infrequency on the show, Brick has become a fan favorite and always has an important task to do when he shows up, often to help Sonny maintain control of his business and keep Sonny from making a mistake that would get him arrested.
Brick has done many things for Sonny, including tracking people down, looking into someone’s history, planting cameras or bugging devices for surveillance, and all-around just helping his boss maintain control of the Northeastern Sea Front organization. He’s even done favors for a few other citizens, including assistant mayor Jordan Ashford (Tanisha Harper). When the two are together on-screen, their chemistry is explosive, and it’s possible Brick could be hanging around Port Charles for a romantic interlude.
Did Brick betray Sonny on General Hospital?
For a time, Sonny suspected that a mole was in his organization, and he suspected that it could have been Brick. However, Brick did a background check on Dex Heller (Evan Hofer) and found that Dex had an offshore bank account with large, recent deposits in it. It turned out that Dex had been hired by Sonny’s son Michael Corinthos (Chad Duell) to gather evidence against Sonny then, later, to protect him. Brick was in the clear, and he continues to work for Sonny to this day.
How many episodes of General Hospital has Stephen A Smith been on?
So far, Smith has only appeared in 44 episodes of General Hospital, but that could change if the show is able to work things out with his schedule. Whenever Brick appears, it’s always for an important reason, so fans hang on his every word, and he’s one of Sonny’s closest confidants. If they’re able to truly create a romantic storyline between him and Jordan, that will certainly help to create more appearances for his beloved character.
