The real reason General Hospital's Ava has to fight for Avery...again

Since General Hospital's Avery Corinthos was born in 2014, there has barely been a time her two warring parents haven't been battling each other for custody. However, some fans are lost as to why Sonny and Ava are having yet another custody fight.

Avery (Ava and Grace Scarola) has been so sought after that Sonny (Maurice Benard) has been trying to gain custody of her practically from the moment she was conceived in a creepy crypt. Hate sex led to Avery's conception, a paternity test followed to make sure Sonny's son Morgan (Bryan Craig) was not the dad, and a kidnapping followed that. Yes, Sonny tried to keep a pregnant Ava hostage so he could have his child as soon as she was born.

Let's not forget Avery's dramatic birth. Nina (then played by Michelle Stafford), who was experiencing a psychotic break after emerging from her coma, kidnapped Ava, induced labor, and took off with Avery moments after she was born. Nina convinced herself that Avery was her daughter and even named her Jaime Sommers after her favorite childhood TV character, The Bionic Woman.

After Nina and Avery were found, Ava and Sonny found themselves behind bars so Michael (Chad Duell) sued for custody of his baby sister and won. He declared himself Avery's father and called her AJ, after his biological father. After Sonny was a free man and Ava was presumed dead for a few months, Michael returned the baby to Sonny. That's when Ava and Sonny's first court battle commenced. Ava was awarded custody then, with multiple custody battles ensuing over the years.

By the time Sonny was presumed dead in 2021, he and Ava had forged a truce and shared custody of Avery. They continued that truce until and even co-parented out of the same apartment last year — and then all that peace and harmony came to an abrupt end.

General Hospital's Ava did a bad, bad thing

The peace between Sonny and Ava was so strong at the end of 2023 that Sonny asked Ava to move in with her when she was being stalked. Avery finally had both her parents living with her, but that arrangement didn't last long.

During an out-of-character story arc on General Hospital, Ava fell for Sonny and was determined to keep him dependent on her after his divorce from Nina. When she discovered that his bipolar med dosage had been played with, she decided to keep that a secret and even had the meds replaced with placebos. Some fans believe that is the reason Sonny kicked Ava out of his place and legally barred her from seeing Avery, but Sonny doesn't even know Ava did that.

Instead, it was Ava's little idea to record Natalia making horrible homophobic remarks and leaking those remarks to the press that did Ava in. Rather than Sonny blaming Natalia (Eva LaRue) for making the comments, he blamed the person who made the recording and decided to use Avery as a weapon against Ava.

So, here we are all these many months later and the latest Avery custody battle hasn't even made it to court yet. While Sonny doesn't look like he's ready for another fight, Kristina (Kate Mansi) may force the matter as part of her own misguided revenge against Ava. May Avery be SORAS'd to a teen before we ever have to see her parents fight each other again.
