It's become clear that General Hospital is heading toward a Lucky and Elizabeth reunion after all these years, but is that really such a good idea? Sometimes, high school sweethearts should remain just that. Here's why.
Teenage dreams? Or a nightmare?
Lucky Spencer (Jonathan Jackson) and Elizabeth Webber (Rebecca Herbst) were only teenagers when they first met. In fact, Lucky wasn't interested in Elizabeth at all and instead had a crush on her older sister Sarah. Only after Lucky found Liz alone in the park, right after she had been attacked, he finally started to care for her.

Not long after, Lucky learned that his parents' romance started when his father sexually assaulted his mother. That just pushed Lucky further toward Elizabeth and away from Luke (Tony Geary) and Laura (Genie Francis). While Lucky's need to care for Liz was endearing at the time, it now strikes us as a little off-putting. Why did Lucky only show an interest in this young woman when she was a damsel in distress and not sooner?
While their romance seemed sweet and innocent, it later turned into anything but. Perhaps how it all started was why it was doomed to fail — just like with Luke and Laura.
Did Lucky ever make Elizabeth happy?
After Lucky was presumed dead in 1999, Elizabeth mourned him but also struck up a sweet friendship with Jason Morgan (Steve Burton). That friendship seemed to be turning into more, but then Lucky returned, and Elizabeth returned to Lucky. Sadly, Lucky was a changed young man and has honestly never reverted back to being the sweet teen Elizabeth first met.
Through the years, Elizabeth watched Lucky cheat on her with her sister, become addicted to drugs, and turn violent at times. Their marriages were never happy, and each one cheated on the other. Lucky slept with Maxie Jones (Kirsten Storms) and Elizabeth slept with Jason, which led to the birth of Jake.
When Elizabeth cheated on Lucky with his brother Nikolas (Tyler Christopher), they were not married but had planned to wed again. However, Lucky found out about the affair and tore Elizabeth to shreds, wondering where the girl was he found in the park while they were in high school. That line right there helped sum up their relationship. Elizabeth had become a woman, and Lucky was still waiting for a girl who no longer existed.
General Hospital grown-ups?
A lot has happened since Lucky and Elizabeth were last together. First, he left her to raise three children on her own. He had legally claimed Liz's two older sons, Cameron (Will Lipton) and Jake (Hudson West), as his. Plus, Liz gave him a child of his own when Aiden (Colin Cassidy) was born, but Lucky couldn't be bothered to participate in raising him. That right there is another red flag.
Just a few short months ago, Elizabeth read Lucky for filth for abandoning his son after he was thinking of leaving town and abandoning him again. It was a fitting scene, but her sentiments did not last long. Lucky decided to stay and all seems to have been forgiven, but why?
While Elizabeth worked as a nurse and raised three young men, Lucky was traveling the world helping strangers in need while forgetting he had a family at home — for years. She grew up, and Lucky never did.
Perhaps Elizabeth summed it up best when she recently told Lucky that she was only human and couldn't be his angel. He has idealized her for more than 25 years and maybe that is why they were never meant to be.
