Rava or Rexis? General Hospital strikes gold with Ava, Ric, and Alexis

General Hospital has an embarrassment of riches on its hands. It's just a question of whether the show uses them right and gives us the triangle that's just waiting to happen.

The case for Rava

Ric (Rick Hearst) and Ava (Maura West) never really knew one another before this year. Ric wasn't around much when Ava first arrived in town, but he did marry her best friend for a hot minute during his 2015 stint in Port Charles. Ric was the first lawyer Nina (Cynthia Watros) thought of when she knew Ava needed an attorney, so she made a phone call, which resulted in some of the most delightful scenes we've had all year.

Ava's crush on Ric has been apparent from the start, with Nina warning her how duplicitous Ric can be. Ric, on the other hand, arrived back in town, still pining for Elizabeth (Rebecca Herbst). Even after she firmly friend-zoned him, Ric couldn't stay away — until Ava's trial became his focus.

While Ric first took on Ava's case so he could prove Ava's innocence to Molly (Kristen Vaganos), he grew to truly believe in Ava. He didn't want to see her go to jail because Kristina (Kate Mansi) accidentally fell out a window. Ava was touched to know Ric had faith in her and knew she would never hurt a pregnant woman.

Their countless dinners preparing for her case and their several dinners since the trial ended turned us into Rava fans in a flash, but then GH had to make us nostalgic for another one of Ric's old loves.

The case for Rexis

Ric and Alexis (Nancy Lee Grahn) pretty much hate each other. Even when they were married, they seemed to hate each other, but they were actually very much in love. Alexis just couldn't handle the fact that Ric slept with her daughter Sam one fateful night, and who could blame her?

Since he's been back, they have done nothing but spit venom at one another until Alexis begrudgingly asked Ric to help her decorate for Christmas, and Ric reluctantly agreed. It was all for their daughter Molly's sake, but that didn't mean the chemistry between them wasn't as strong as it was two decades ago when Ric and Alexis were first together.

Rick Hearst and Nancy Lee Grahn still have chemistry to spare, and we need more scenes like the Christmas Eve scenes where Ric tried to use a little mistletoe for a kiss and Alexis quickly knocked it out of his hands.

General Hospital's Ric may have a dilemma

When a character has chemistry with two formidable women, what is a soap to do? Well, give us a triangle, of course — and one in which it's hard to know who to root for.

The recent history between Ava and Alexis makes a triangle all the more intriguing. The women were once sisters-in-law as Alexis was married to Ava's beloved brother, Julian. Just this year, Alexis learned it was Ava who ratted her out and told the NY Bar Association that Alexis had perjured herself about her relationship with Neil Byrne (Joe Flanagan). She wanted to get back at Alexis for the way she treated Julian toward the end of his life.

Plus, Kristina still insists that Ava pushed her out the window on purpose, which just drives the animosity between Ava and Alexis. If they were to fight over the same man, Port Charles had better duck for cover because it would get very ugly very fast — but it would also be wildly entertaining. Now, to see if GH goes there...
