General Hospital star Kimberly McCullough (ex-Robin Scorpio) is delving into the heyday of soaps via her new Sundance project.
Kimberly McCullough may not be actively airing on General Hospital at the moment, but Robin Scorpio's portrayer isn't straying far from Port Charles with her latest project.
The actress has begun working on a loosely autobiographical pilot called Hey Day that is set behind the scenes of a GH-like soap of the 1980s. It stars Finola Hughes (Anna Devane) as the executive producer of the fictional daytime series (in a role McCullough says was inspired by GH's former EP Gloria Monty), and Bree Williamson (Claudette Bolland) as a cocaine-loving former ballerina turned soap star.
"This is a show that I have been conceiving for a while and it all started because as I got older, I started to hear stories from, you know, the soap legends about what it was like in the '80s and it was just a different time," McCullough shared with Soap Opera Digest. "Even though I was an actress on the show, I was a kid, so I didn't quite understand the debauchery that was going on -- or rather, I was shielded from it. So anyway, it became very interesting to me and so I wrote the show and I'm planning on pitching it to the different networks. But in the meantime, Sundance has a contest called the Episodic Story Lab and I submitted a script and basically got into the last round of the competition."

The actress has created a visual pitch of Hey Day as one of the steps to win the Sundance contest, and in it, she shares even more information about the project and what it was like to grow up in the public eye on one of the most watched television shows in history.
"I want the people that I'm pitching it to to know that there's an audience out there, that there's a lot of nostalgia that people remember, because like I say in the pitch, people say that was their favorite time. It was a really juicy time because all of these actors had this, like, crazy fame, you know?" she says. "It seemed like everyone was watching soap operas, so it was a really sort of exciting time."

PS: McCullough asks that fans use the hashtag #80sheydaysoap when sharing the video or posts about the project. "That way, when I'm talking about it to different companies, I can actually say to them, 'These people actually want to see the show.'"
