Why is wanted man Sidwell openly doing business on General Hospital?

Apparently, being an international criminal means nothing to General Hospital baddie Jenz Sidwell (Carlo Rota). Not only did he purchase Wyndemere Castle on Spoon Island, but he’s also begun purchasing artwork from the Jerome Gallery. He’s even had meals once or twice in public places and seems to have little regard for the fact that the WSB has been on his trail since he tried to kill Jason (Steve Burton), Anna (Finola Hughes), and Lucky (Jonathan Jackson). Why is this wanted man not only appearing out in the open but using his real name in the process?

How can he be so brazen

General Hospital’s Sidwell has proven that he’ll kill anyone to get what he wants. He came to Port Charles to retrieve the diamonds that Holly (Emma Samms) stole from him and set a bomb that nearly killed her daughter Sasha (Sofia Mattsson) and Jason. WSB station chief Brennan (Charles Mesure) even led the assault squad that tried to take him out before he detonated the bomb.

And now it would seem that he’s possibly behind the bomb that went off in Sonny’s (Maurice Benard) penthouse, setting his son Michael (Chad Duell) on fire and leaving him with incredibly serious burns. Now that he’s bought a home in Port Charles, he’s brazenly out in the open and could bump into any one of the people he’s attacked at any time. Why does he do that, knowing once Brennan finds out his location, he’ll arrest him or worse?

An easy soap opera answer is that there would be a legal loophole that he’ll jump through or that he was in another country. But the WSB stands for World Security Bureau, so not being in America wouldn’t matter.

The incendiary device used in Sonny’s place was WSB tech, which Sidwell had acquired. His device procurement implies an affiliation with a high-end international arms dealer like Pikeman. Perhaps that organization has even offered him some sort of legal protection. But that seems unlikely since they’re also targets of the Bureau.

It was established that the diamonds he retrieved from Holly were worth hundreds of millions of dollars, so he could buy his way out of pretty much anything. Maybe he paid to have his record obliterated with no trace of any misdeeds listed anywhere. Heck, if he can sneak a bomb into Sonny’s highly secure house, he could also break into the WSB mainframe. But then, why set up shop in Port Charles?

Sonny’s territory is key because it’s a strategic port from Lake Erie in the U.S. to Canada to the Atlantic Ocean. And Sonny’s been having mysterious heart issues that he’s trying to overcome. Perhaps Sidwell has been dosing Sonny with Digitalis, trying to induce a heart attack. His bomb failed, and this method could be him playing the long game.

If Sidwell was simply laying a trap for his enemies by being so out in the open, he wouldn’t bother to buy such an exquisite home as Wyndemere or even attempt to decorate it. No, he’s setting up a permanent shop there, with plans to take over Sonny’s territory, and has some kind of protection that will prevent the authorities from capturing him.

Things are amping up, and Sonny’s going to need all the help he can get, especially from Brick (Stephen A. Smith), Jason, and perhaps even his loose colleague, Ms. Wu (Lydia Look).
