Who does General Hospital's Willow really want? Katelyn MacMullen weighs in

Wishy-washy waffling Willow is at it again on General Hospital. The queen of indecisiveness says one thing but then does another. She loves her husband and the family they created, but she also can't seem to stay away from Drew Quartermaine, her husband's uncle.

It was only in 2023 when Willow had an out-of-body near-death experience in which she identified herself as Michael's fiance and the mother of his children. Those were the only things she saw herself as and when she made her miraculous cancer recovery, she threw herself into those roles with a gusto. However, she also didn't forget the man she believed saved her life.

Never mind that Liesl is the person who gave her bone marrow and more people had a hand in bringing Liesl back from Greenland than Drew did. To Willow, Drew is her hero and single-handedly rescued her aunt from the evil Victor Cassadine, his weather machine, and a bioweapon.

That hero-worship attitude led Willow to spend as much time as possible with Drew, leading to their kiss on the Fourth of July. Against, her better judgment, Willow even slept with Drew months later on the playroom floor and now the truth is out there thanks to the nanny cam and Tracy's magic fingers on Michael's phone.

Since Willow likes to see herself as pure and perfect and prefers others to see her that way too, it was a bit of a departure for Willow to do what she did with Drew. However, Katelyn MacMullen was excited when she saw what Willow and Drew were about to do when she got her script.

"I was like, 'Uh-oh, that can’t be good!'" MacMullen said in an interview with Soap Opera Digest. "I think at the bottom of the script it said something like, 'Unbeknownst to them, everything is caught on the nanny cam,' and I was like, 'Okay! We’re going there! This will see the light of day."

When that video did indeed see the light of day at the Quartermaine holiday party, it was juicy soap goodness and a Christmas gift to fans. To MacMullen, that just added to the scandal of it all.

"Even if it had just been seen by her partner, she would have had to answer for what she’d done, but for it to air in front of their whole family?" MacMullen marveled. "That’s just the worst-case scenario. When I first read the script, I felt almost sick to my stomach for like two days because I was like, 'Oh, this is how it’s probably going to feel on the day [we tape it].' Like, they’re not only seeing her betray their loved one, they’re literally seeing her naked! It’s like the worst thing that could happen. I will say, though, that that’s what made it so fun to shoot. It’s fun to be in situations where everybody’s jaw is on the floor!"

Where does Willow go from here?

After her big secret was revealed in the most humiliating way, Willow took her children and moved in with her mother, Nina. Then, to Nina's shock and horror, she invited Drew to Nina's for Christmas while still claiming to love Michael. MacMullen sees that as an innocent move.

"I think inviting him to Christmas is more about him not being alone on Christmas. It’s also about his daughter and everything she’s been through and needing to be with her dad on Christmas, and needing to be around people and hopefully in a situation that makes her feel loved and happy on Christmas, as happy as she can be," the actress reasoned.

However, MacMullen acknowledged that Willow might not even know who or what she wants right now, which makes this storyline all the more open-ended because anything can happen.

"I know that she doesn’t want her family to get hurt or caught in the crossfire of her decision-making," MacMullen explained. "She doesn’t want to hurt Michael. She doesn’t want to ruin her family, essentially. She doesn’t want to want Drew the way she does. I think Willow is so unclear about what she wants; it’s all about knowing what she doesn’t want and then sort of acting against her better instincts about it. I think it’s all very confusing to her."
