When General Hospital's Spencer Cassadine plunged into the River Seine with Esme Prince in January, fans thought Spencer would rise from the dead within months after he finished filming Ryan Murphy's Monsters: The Lyle and Erik Menendez Story. However, that wasn't meant to be.

Nicholas Alexander Chavez says goodbye to General Hospital

From the moment Chavez first appeared on GH in 2021, he was a hit with fans. His pairing with both Sydney Mikayla's and Tabayna Ali's Trina Robinson were hits, and "Sprina" became the young love story to watch. Spencer and Trina were finally happy together before he fell into the river with Esme.

In May, Chavez took to X (formerly Twitter) to confirm that he wouldn't be returning to GH anytime soon.

"I’m so appreciative of the opportunity that GH gave me, and I wouldn’t be as busy as I am professionally if it weren’t for the talented producers, writers, directors and fellow actors," Chavez wrote. " Frank Valentini is a mentor and a friend, and we’ve had some pretty extensive conversations about my future on the show. While there are no current plans for me to return, we are still talking very openly about future possibilities for Spencer in Port Charles."

Months later, news broke that Chavez's star was still rising as he was cast in another Murphy series, FX's Grotesquerie. However, that doesn't mean that GH is not still on the young actor's mind.

Chavez ponders Spencer's future

Since the premieres of Monsters and Grotesquerie in September, Chavez has been thrust into the national spotlight, but he still has hope for Spencer's resurrection.

When TV Line asked the actor if he had ruled out a GH return, Chavez offered a direct answer.

"No. Port Charles is a crazy place," Chavez said. "We'll have to see what happens."

Chavez also acknowledged that Spencer's life could go on without him, meaning he would be okay with the character being recast.

"Of course. I understand that the show has needs,” Chavez said. "I would be fully supportive of that."

If Spencer does return...

A Spencer resurrection would give Trina Robinson a story, something the character has been lacking since Spencer's presumed death. It could also revitalize the Cassadine clan, as most members of the famous GH family have been written off the canvas in 2024.
