On the October 3 episode of General Hospital, fans were surprised when Marshall Ashford suddenly accepted a clarinet gig touring with jazz musician Wynton Marsalis. Does that mean Robert Gossett is no longer a part of the GH cast?
Robert Gossett exits General Hospital, but for how long?
According to Soap Opera Digest, Gossett is indeed off GH—for now. However, sources tell the outlet that Marshall's exit is temporary, and he is expected to return to the canvas.
Recurring players James Patrick Stuart (Valentin Cassadine) and Michael E. Knight (Martin Grey) found themselves in similar situations earlier this year. Knight just made his return as Marty in September after being off-screen since February.

Gossett joined the GH cast in 2021 and won two Daytime Emmy Awards. In 2022, Gosssett took home the gold in the Oustanding Guest Performer category. In 2023, he won for Outstanding Supporting Actor. During his 2023 acceptance speech, the actor paid tribute to his son, Luke, who had taken his own life the month before.
More story for Marshall?
Marshall has not been seen regularly for months, but fans feel there is still story to mine for this complicated character. Marshall only recently learned he had been misdiagnosed with schizophrenia for decades, causing him to abandon his family, thinking it was for their own good.
After learning that he didn't have schizophrenia, after all, Marshall's guilt over all the years he lost with his family was palpable. Fans expected to see more fallout from Marshall's discovery and watch him pick up the pieces of his life with the Ashford family by his side.
When Curtis learned that Marshall didn't even want to take the gig with Marsalis, he talked his father into going. Curtis assured Marshall that he'd be waiting to resume their father-son relationship when he returned.
Marshall is the second character to be written off GH to pursue musical dreams in the last two months. Jacqueline Grace Lopez exited the soap in August when Allison "Blaze" Ramirez left Port Charles and her girlfriend, Kristina, to tour with former GH musical character Miguel Morez (Ricky Martin).
